Name: JARDINIANO, Mark Joseph B. Course/Class Schedule: BSCE-1A/Monday Date performed: September 09, 2022 Date submitted: _____________ CHM01aL – Chemistry for Engineers – Laboratory EXPERIMENT NO. 1 COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS INTRODUCTION Familiarization with laboratory apparatus specially the common ones is very essential in dealing with experiments in Chemistry. Every student should be able to identify not only the materials and reagents necessary for an experiment but more importantly the apparatuses to be used in the conduct of such activity. OBJECTIVE 1. To identify the different laboratory apparatuses and their features. 2. To know the use of each of the apparatus and to be aware of the possible replacement or substitute if an apparatus is not available. PROCEDURE 1. On the table below, draw the apparatuses using pencil. You may have noticed that they are grouped according to the material from which they are made of. Moreso, they are arranged from the more common ones to the less common. This will somehow help you to easily recall their names and forms. You may refer to Google for the features of each of them. 2. Give the use of the apparatus on the column next to the drawing. If the apparatus has multiple uses give at least two (2) of its uses. Again, you may refer to Google for this part. A. Glass Apparatus 1. test tube 2. beaker Use (s) -Test tubes are widely used to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals, especially for qualitative experiments and essays. -Test tubes are also used as collections devices for things like blood samples -Beakers are useful as a reaction container or to hold liquid or solid samples. -They are also used to catch liquids from titrations. 3. graduated cylinder -It is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. They are not intended for mixing, stirring, and heating unlike test tubes. 4. glass rod -A glass stirring rod, or glass rod is a piece of laboratory equipment to mix chemicals. -The glass rod can also be divided into laboratory used stirring rod and sight glass used rod. Drawing 5. erlenmeyer flask -They are also used to contain liquids and for mixing, heating, cooling, etc. -It’s usually used in chemistry experiments in order to mix different chemicals or to contain titrate of a solution. 6. florence flask -Florence flasks are used as a reaction vessel as well as for heating solutions. -It also used for distillation and ease of swirling, and is produced in a number of different glass thicknesses to stand different types of use. 7. laboratory thermometer -It is a thermometer used to measure temperature with a high level of precision for applications, such as experiment monitoring, instrument calibration, materials testing, and maintaining a sterile work environment. 8. alcohol lamp -Alcohol lamp is generally made up of glass, brass or aluminum and it uses ethyl alcohol or spirit as a fuel. -It is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion in a laboratory. 9. funnel -It is used to channel liquids or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening. -Funnels are also used for pouring liquids or powder through a small opening and for holding the filter paper in filtration. 10. watch glass -A watch glass is a round, concave glass dish used for evaporation in chemistry. -And it can also be employed for weighing solid and as a lid for flasks and beakers. 11. reagent bottle -Reagent bottles are intended to contain chemicals in liquid or powder form for laboratories and stored in cabinets or on shelves. -It is a special container for various liquids and solid reagents in the laboratory. 12. Pipette -It is generally used for moving small amounts of liquid or when measuring and dispensing liquid in mL units. -Without this, the transfer of liquids from one location to another would be messy and unsafe. 13. volumetric flask -It is a lab glass or plasticware used to prepare a solution. It is used to make up a solution to a known volume. -Volumetric flasks are used to measure volumes much more precisely than beakers or Erlenmeyer flasks. 14. distilling flask 15. separatory funnel 16. condenser -It is primarily used for distillation, the process of separating a mixture of liquids with different boiling points through evaporation and condensation. -It is also used to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification. -Separatory funnels are used in the lab for liquid-liquid extractions, separating a mixture’s components into two solvent phases of different densities. -Condensers are employed in power plants to condense exhaust steam from turbines and in refrigeration plants to condense refrigerant vapors, such as ammonia and fluorinated hydrocarbons. 17. burette -Burette is a laboratory apparatus frequently used to dispense and measure variable amounts of liquid or sometimes gas within chemical and industrial testing specially for the titration process in volumetric analysis. 18. thistle tube -Glass thistle tubes are a useful piece of glassware for adding chemical solutions to a reaction vessel. -It also minimize the risk of reaction occurring too quickly and bubbling over. B. Metal Apparatus 1. test tube holder Use (s) -A test tube holder is used for holding a test tube in place or when the tube is hot and cannot be touched -It is also used to hold test tubes while performing crucial chemical reactions as it prevents the effect of hazardous chemicals falling on the body and skin 2. crucible tong -It is used to grasp a hot crucibles, flasks, evaporating dishes, or even small beakers. Drawing 3. triplebalance beam -The triple beam balance is used in a laboratory to measure the mass directly from the objects, find mass by difference for liquid, and measure out substances. 4. tripod -It is used as a platform to hold and support glassware, such as beakers and flasks, during experiments and when the glassware is not in use. 5. wire gauze -It is used and placed on the support ring that is attached to the resort stand between the Bunsen burner and the glassware to support the beakers, flasks, or other glassware during heating. 6. spatula -It is also used to allow the heat to be dispersed more evenly. -Spatulas are commonly used to transfer samples or chemicals from their original containers to weighing paper, weighing boats, weighing bottles, weighing funnels, or other vessels or containers for weighing. 7. iron stand -It is used to support the iron ring when heating substances or mixtures in a flask or beaker (using a Bunsen burner) clamps can also be used to hold glasswares on the iron ring. 8. iron ring -Iron ring is used to support flasks or funnels upright in a stand. This is to enable the stability of the flask of funnel while testing is being performed. 9. universal clamp 10. cork borer -It allows the ring stand to provide support for other equipment and a means of raising equipment above the work surface. -It is a laboratory equipment used to hold things and is placed in an iron stand to elevate other equipment such as beakers. -It is a tool that is often used for cutting a hole in a cork or rubber stopper to insert glass tubing. -It serves as a stopper because it stops the flow of compounds in the gas phase. 11. set of weights -They are used to calibrate certain lab equipment such as electronic balances. -They are also used for twopan balances which one object is placed on one pan, and weights are placed on the other pan until the scale is balanced. C. Others (plastic, wood, rubber, marble, porcelain, or combination) Apparatus 1. test tube brush Use (s) -These brushes are very durable and have hog bristles and a wire body and are used for cleaning test tubes. 2. wash bottle -Wash bottles primarily used to wash or rinse various pieces of glassware or plasticware in the laboratory. -They can also be filled and used as storage with numerous solvents. 3. dropper -Droppers are instruments used for measuring and transferring liquid in small amounts. Drawing 4. test tube rack 5. stopper 6. clay triangle -Test tube racks are laboratory equipment used to hold upright multiple test tubes at the same time. -They are most commonly used when various different solutions are needed to work with simultaneously, for safety reasons, for safe storage of test tubes, and to ease the transport of multiple tubes. -Laboratory stoppers are used not only to prevent spills, but also to trap noxious fumes or to allow the vessel to be shaken. -It is a laboratory equipment used in the process of heating substances. -It is also used in conjunction with other lab equipment to create a stable framework in which to place a substance that is usually a solid chemical while it is heated to a high temperature. 7. evaporating dish -Evaporating dish is a tool 8. porcelain crucible 9. mortar pestle and 10. rubber tubing 11. rubber aspirator bulb
