Arts Appreciation – Chapter 5 -Reflection
TWO-DIMENSIONAL MEDIA
Art is expressed in different media wherein the two-dimension artworks have a wide range of
media used. It is to further exhibits the meaning on arts by presenting it in a different manner from the
others. In many cases, it is to show a certain style that an artist wanted to work on. Two-dimensional
artworks include drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage. And each of these two-dimensional
artworks uses different types of media. Drawing is said to be the “simplest and most efficient way to
communicate visual ideas”. This is because drawing does not involve the intricacy of most artworks such
as sculpture. Also, it uses simple materials that are present for centuries. It is also denoted as the
foundation for other two- or three-dimensional artworks. The tools needed for a drawing are also widely
available even before. Another two-dimensional artwork is the painting with six types of medium. Next is
printmaking which could make multiples form from original image through as a transfer process. And
lastly, the collage that uses different objects to create images.
These media are used due to factors. In the older ages, the availability of the material and tools is
a huge factor. With that, the media used in two-dimensional arts before are straightforwardly determined.
However, with the passing of the time and invention of different tools, materials and tools used for these
two-dimensional artworks became more diverse, hence the variety of it today. Another factor could be
the preference of the artists. Some artist wanted to work on a certain medium because of the ease of its
usage. Say for drawing, an artist would want a material that is easy to apply hence usage of dry media.
While some artists would want to work on medium that would last longer and stand the test of time,
hence using oil-based medium on painting. Depending on the artists, the usage of these vast media is
determined. It is also apparent that media used by artists heavily depend on the artwork they are doing.
Say for example in painting, the artist would use either encaustic, tempera, fresco, oil, acrylic, or
watercolor. It is because these medium are specialized for painting. The same way an artist would use
charcoal, graphite, chalk, pastels, ink, or felt tip pens when drawing.
To conclude, the diverse media used in two-dimensional artworks depend on many reasons. And
each of these medium brings different and unique character to the artworks that further brings meaning
to it. It is used according to its designated purpose and use depending on the artwork. To bring out the
beauty and diversity of artworks, different media is used. While to bring the essence, character, and style
on an artwork, a media is determined. There is not a right and wrong formula in an artwork, but there are
specific materials and tools that are designed for its certain purpose.

THE CAMERA ARTS
Photographs are able to hold memories and even record history. And with the advancement of
technology, photography became more popular. It is democratized nowadays that even those who are
not professional photographers can already capture photos. And this is also an art and in fact was deemed
as the first high tech artistic medium of the Industrial Age. This has also given us forever “physical
perception of the world and created an uneasy but important relationship between the photograph and
other more traditional artistic media”.
Camera arts started with the invention of camera obscura which was later innovated and improve
to what it is now. The progress of camera arts was evident from long hours of exposure for the image to
come out to instant click today. And with much improved cameras and much high-tech lens, photography
became more accessible. It is not even surprising that people nowadays could make high value
photographs only with a smartphone. This shows that the camera arts in the modern times is more
straightforward than before. This results to a more engagement of people to arts specifically the camera
arts. Moreover, camera arts had also changed the use of other media of arts such as two-dimensional
media. Since drawing or painting requires dexterity which cannot be learned quickly, camera arts became
a go-to for starting artists. With the presence of first-rate tools and gadgets, it became easier for artists
to master the art of photography. Also, because photos provide a realistic and unedited view to the world,
this could deliver message, feelings, and emotions better. Visual ideas are also better represented through
camera arts that made it more upfront than other media of arts. And similar to other forms of art, camera
arts also experiment through creativity where an image could become more elevating. And like every art,
camera arts are also a driver of culture for it could document a culture and a society. Further, with the
advancement of camera, photojournalism also rises. This art became a tool for practical purposes
specifically in journalism. It also became the foundation of film, video art, and digital technology. For
camera is continually improved, it was also able to transform the existing arts to something new and
introduce by-products like film and videos.
in summary, camera art is a medium of arts that uses a more advance tools which is a camera. It
is able to translate a meaning through a realistic image depicted in the photograph. Through this, another
medium is being formed while other medium is being paralleled. With the democratization of the use of
camera in the present times, it has become easier to people to shift to camera arts or start off an artistic
venture through camera arts. And with the massive practice of camera arts, creativity became a particular
skill that takes a photo stand out. And while people are on the race for taking the nicest photographs,
history, culture, and society is also captured and documented that shall never be erased.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL MEDIA
Compared to two-dimensional artworks, three-dimensional artworks are more defined. It has
dimension of height, width, and depth. The three-dimensional artworks include sculpture, installation and
performance art, craft, and product design. Unlike two-dimensional artworks, three-dimensional artworks
show a physical space and a texture that is apparent in the artworks’ nature without an effort of simulating
it. More than a form of expression, three-dimensional arts particularly the sculpture indicates cultural
representation especially during the earlier times. It is to reflect a “resemblance of specific figures”. Threedimensional arts also represent a more accurate illustration of objects that would limit misconception of
representational image.
There are different methods used in three-dimensional artworks such as carving, casting,
modeling, and construction or assemblage. Each of these requires different process which could either be
through subtractive process or additive process. The former is basically removing a part of an existing
mass while additive process is where materials are built up to create a form. And with the presence of
modern technology, modern variations of three-dimensional media are created. These are installation art,
performance art, craft, and product design. These shows that art could also be functional. The threedimensional arts are also not restricted to what is traditional. It could incorporate much intricate designs
which creativity is apparent. it is not boxed to a planar surface but could experiment on different
materials. Three-dimensional arts also include performance art that even incorporate the artist himself to
the artwork. Wherein the art became more interactive to its audience as compared to a limited interaction
avenue with two-dimensional arts. Arts such as product design can also be used in everyday situation.
Another is craft that is also true to the dictum of forms follows functionality. For this kind of art are created
for its particular purpose aiding the life of human.
Briefly, the three-dimensional arts provide more than a two-dimensional art. It is not just an art
anymore but a functional object that is readily accessible to human. It is not restricted but is openly
improved through creativity of the artists. It is not only for aesthetic purposes but could also be a better
representation of objects. It has also played huge part on the culture of ancient community and is
continually evolving according to the culture of the present times.
