The story is set during the Crusades of the 12th century. A French village
blacksmith goes to the aid of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in its defence
against the Ayyubid Muslim Sultan, Saladin, who is fighting to claim back
the city from the Christians; this leads to the Battle of Hattin. The
screenplay is a heavily fictionalised portrayal of the life of Balian of Ibelin
(c. 1143–93).
Balian of Ibelin: What is Jerusalem worth?
Saladin: Nothing. [Walks away] Everything!

Saladin: A king does not kill a king. Were you not close enough to a
great king to learn by his example?

Richard Coeur de Lion: We come by this road to find Balian, who was
defender of Jerusalem.

Balian of Ibelin: I am the blacksmith.
Richard Coeur de Lion: And I am the king of England.

King Baldwin IV: A king may move a man, a father may claim a son. That
man can also move himself. And only then does that man truly begin his
own game. But remember that, even when those who move you be kings
or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. When you stand before
God you cannot say "but I was told by others to do thus" or that "virtue was

not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that.
博杜安四世：君命或不可违，父命或不可逆，人仍可自主行动。那样人才能开创

Balian of Ibelin: This army will be destroyed, and the city left
defenseless.
Guy de Lusignan: When I wish a blacksmith to advise me in war, I will
tell him.
Balian of Ibelin: Saladin wants you to come out. He is waiting for you
to make that mistake.
