CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
In the 21st century, social media is defined as a computer-based technology that allows people to share
their ideas, opinions, and information through virtual networks and communities. Also, social media is an
internet-based platform that allows people to share content such as personal information, documents, films,
and applications on a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Social media allows students, teachers, and parents to
access more helpful material, connect with learning groups, and access other educational systems that make
education more convenient. Students and institutions can use social media platforms to improve their learning
processes in a variety of ways especially in this new normal education system.
According to the article from Child hope titled Alternative Learning for Students (2021), the Basic
Education–Learning Continuity Plan was created by the Department of Education in response to the new
normal. The goal of this plan is to keep children, instructors, and staff safe. It also plans to provide high-quality
distant learning using self-learning modules. These are available in digital formats, as well as on radio,
television, and online media. Likewise, amidst this pandemic it was very useful in the new normal education
system because this is one of the easiest ways to connect with teacher and learning source for different
subject.
In school, there are different subject including Mathematics and Science. In the new curriculum wherein,
there is an additional two years’ phases for student called “Senior High School” it includes different strand and
tracks which is ABM (Accountancy and Business Management), STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics), TVL (Technical and Vocational Livelihood) and HUMSS (Humanities and Social Science). In our
daily lives, it always involves Mathematics and Science. On the other hand, Mathematics and Science are the
major or core subject of STEM strand or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics strand.
One of the most important disciplines is Mathematics. Mathematics is a subject that deals with
numbers, forms, facts, measurements, and logic. Furthermore, Mathematics is an essential component of
human logic and thought, as well as attempts to comprehend the world and ourselves. Mathematics is a great
approach to develop mental discipline while also encouraging logical reasoning and mental rigor. However,
Science is a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and
showing the operation of general laws (dictionary.com). Also, science is a broad field of study that investigates
the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world via observation and experimentation (What is
Science?Study.com 2021).
Social media is a great help for the students and has many benefits for their education. Also, it serves
as a link between all the institutions that contributed to the new normal emergence. It aided in the preservation
of social ties and support systems. Furthermore, via social media news feeds, students can find informational
and relevant websites they want to follow to be kept in the loop (Willbold, 2019). Also, social media provides a
platform where you can share your knowledge and gain credibility in your chosen field(s) of specialization(s),
(University of Cumbria). According to Ktoridou and Eteokleous 2009, social media platforms allow students to
interact with group members to find help in solving learning problems. Moreover, using social media platforms
may enhance learning achievement in the online learning environment.
The use of social platforms and social media, groups tend to increase student involvement in
discussion and out of class communication with their teachers and peers and offers support and collaboration
with more advanced peers during Mathematics subjects which can be of great value to struggling students,
(Biton and Segal, 2021). On the other hand, social media has a negative effect on the academic performance of
students. Social media although has been recognized as an important resource for education today, studies,
however, show that students use social media such as Facebook for fun, to kill time, to meet existing friends,
or to make a new one, (Ellison, Steinfield, Lampe, 2007). According to Kupposwanny and Shankar (2010),
social media grab the attention of the students and then diverts it toward non-educational and inappropriate
actions including useless chatting. Although it has been put forward those students spend much time
participating in social media activities, with many students blaming the various social networking sites for their
steady decrease in grade point average, (Kimberly, Jeong, and Lee, 2009).
As time passed by, social media had a huge impact on the lives of every student as they face the new
normal due to the pandemic. Also, it has various and different effects on students. For that reason, we'd like to
conduct this study to point out its effects of it. On the other hand, the purpose of this research study is to
gather information's and investigate the current influence of social media on students that are learning Science
and Math subjects. This focuses on the effects of using social media on the education of students in the
STEM strand.
Statement of the Problem
The study aims to determine the influence of social media to the learning of Grade 11 STEM Students.
1.How often does the students use social media?
2.What are the influence of social media to the learning of Grade 11 STEM Students in Mathematics and
Science subjects during the new normal?
3. How does social media influence the learning of Grade 11 STEM Students in Mathematics and Science
subjects during the new normal?
4. What is the significant influence of social media to the learning of Grade 11 STEM Students in Mathematics
and Science subjects?
5. What are the actions or activities may be provided to maximize the positive influence of social media and
minimize the negative effects of these to the learning of Grade 11 STEM Students in Mathematics and Science
subject?
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The researcher focused on determining the influence of social media on Grade 11 STEM students'
learning in Mathematics and Science subjects during the new normal for the school year 2021-2022. They also
identified the target people based on their responses to the prepared interview.
The descriptive research design will be used to conduct the activity, which involved 5 students from
Grade 11 STEM in Tala Senior High School. The researchers created an interview guide to analyze the influence
of social media on Grade 11 STEM students' learning in Mathematics and Science subjects.
Significance of the Study
To the School. This research may give solution to find out the appropriate method that may maximize
the use of social media to teaching and learning Mathematics and Science subjects during the new normal.
To the Teachers. This study may heighten their awareness in identifying the learning tasks that are well
developed as well as the least. This may further be a motivating factor to adapt measures and new strategies
for the improvement of instructions in teaching Mathematics and Science subjects.
To the Students. This study is beneficial to the students for it may give them information and
knowledge that will guide them in controlling the use of social media
To the future Researchers. The outcome and results of this study is beneficial to future researchers
that is studying research related to the current study.
Chapter II
Review of Literature
This chapter presents the review of conceptual and research literatures which have bearing on the
present study.
Conceptual Literature
The following literature concepts are all about distance learning, social media, study habits and
academic performance.
Distance Learning. (CONNICK, GEORGE P. 1999) defined that distance learning takes place when
the instructor and student are not in the same room, but instead are separated by physical
distance. Also distance learning is implemented as a main learning modality around the world due to
pandemics, this includes modular and online learning, which caused students and teachers to use
Social media more often for academic purposes.
Furthermore , (HULL, DAN. 1995) stated that distance learning can overcome barriers to
learning styles. In his study, he said that people have different ways of learning. In distance learning,
barriers that students experience can be overcome, and by using social media, it can be much easier
when it comes to sharing knowledge and pieces of information that make the lessons (in other words
easier) to learn and understand.
Likewise the researchers noticed that distance learning was implemented as the new normal
started due to the pandemic. Also this learning system has a huge impact in the learning of many
students because the things they used to do suddenly changed.
Social Media. According to Tuten and Solomon (2015), Social media are the online means of
communication, conveyance, collaboration, and cultivation among interconnected and interdependent
networks of people, communities, and organizations enhanced by technological capabilities. These
enhanced capabilities influence students in using social media that gives the concepts and ideas
which leads to easier studying and managing of time.
Moreover, (Talaue, Alsaad, Alrushaidan, Alhugaili, Alfahhad, 2018) concluded and stated
that social media have a dual impact on the achievements of the students and it is necessary to use
social media. By responsible use of social media, it can maximize its positive impacts on the learning
of the study.
Likewise, the researcher noticed that social media became a platform where students can
share ideas and concepts.help students to generate ideas and share information related to their
studies with each other that will directly influence their academic performance.
Academic Performance. According to Narad and Abdullah (2016), academic performance is the
knowledge gained which is assessed by marks by a teacher and/or educational goals set by students
and teachers to be achieved over a specific period. They added that these goals are measured by
using continuous assessment or examination results.
Study Habits. According to Romeo M. Losare Jr. (2009), study habits simply mean how students
manage their time in a way that they can review and study regularly. He added that study habits are
the ways the students study. By using social media, students can develop a good studying habits, it
can influence them to be more manageable in their time and allocate their time to studying and other
things properly.
In a study, it is stated that poor study habit leads to poor academic performance, which is why
properly using social media can lead to developing good studying habit that results in higher
performance and higher grades.
Research Literature
According to the study of Alsaif, social media networking consumes the majority of students’
time and redirects it for non-constructive, frequently unethical, deceptive, and improper activities. For
instance, texting, and speaking with friends for the majority of the day is a great way to pass the time,
looking at people’s personal live s while avoiding their real work and studies. His study shows that
60% of the students were ignoring the academic activities because of too much time to social media
than their studies and more than half of the students spent most of their time in utilizing social media
Saleh (2015) found out that social networking sites were used to enhance students’ learning
outcomes and socialization whereas he examined the usage and the impact of social networking
sites in learning and teaching in Saudi Arabia. Through the questions for his study, it showed that the
results are that both teachers and students believe that such use of social media will enhance their
experiences in teaching and learning.
Base on the study of Yaniv and Ruti (2021) the use of social platforms and social media,
groups tend to increase student involvement in discussion and out of class communication with their
teachers and peers during mathematics subject which can be of a great value to struggling student.
In the findings of their study, it indicates that students showed great satisfaction with the opportunity
given to them to study for mathematics matriculation exam through the medium of Facebook and
encourage different kinds of learning opportunities and promoted interaction between teachers and
students themselves to formulate answers for problematic questions.
Based on the result of the study of Peter (2015) Students addictiveness to social network has
a significant influence on their academic performance; Student’s exposure to social media network
has significant influence on students’ academic performance; Use of social media has significant
influence on the academic performance of the students; there is a significant influence on student’s
usages of social media network by age.
According to the study of Owusu-Acheaw and Larson (2015), it was revealed that the use of
social media had affected the academic performance of their respondents negatively and further
confirmed that there was a strong positive relationship between the use of social media and
academic performance.
According to the study of Talaue, Alsaad, Alrushaidan, Alhugaili, Alfahhad, (2018), they
concluded that social media have a dual impact on student achievement, and it is necessary to
approach adolescents' use of social networks with ultimate responsibility.
Synthesis
The previously mentioned review of literature provided the researcher with great amount of
information that were closely relevant to the current study.
Narad and Abdullah's (2016) study about academic performance and Romeo M. Losare Jr.'s
(2009) study about study habits are significant in this research, both of study help the researchers to
find out and identify the influence of using social media. Furthermore ,Tuten and Solomon's (2015)
study about social media and Connick, George P.'s (1999) study about distance learning is essential
in the current study because it helps the researchers determine the causes of why the students use
social media
The study of Yaniv, Ruti (2021) and Saleh (2015) reveals that the use social media increase the
involvement of students in class, especially in learning Mathematics and science subjects. Studies of
Yaniv, Ruti (2021) and Saleh’s studies agreed that there is a positive effect in using social media.
Biton and Segal’s study showed that social media like Facebook promoted interaction between
teachers and students while Saleh’s study showed that social networking sites were used to enhance
students’ learning outcomes and socialization.
Both Yaniv and Ruti (2021) and Saleh (2015) disagree on the negative impact of social
media on the learning of the students. Saleh’s study results showed that teachers and students are
not using g social media in an appropriate way. Both the teachers and students agree that they use
social media for interaction with other students and teachers but for purposes other than education.
On the other hand, Yaniv and Ruti’s study results showed that the identified the social network as a
means of not only accelerating pedagogical goals and their students’ learning process, but a way of
sharing knowledge and encouraging critical thinking.
Conceptual Framework
The concepts mentioned were the basis for creating this research as presented in Figure 1

Definition of Terms
For the purpose of clarification, the important terms used in this study have been defined.
The following terms are:
New normal. According to dictionary.com, new normal is the current situation, social custom, that is
different from what has been experienced or done before but is expected to become usual or typical. In this
study, new normal is used as the one of the main factors that helps to determine the influence of social media
to the new learning system of the respondents.
Social media. According to techtarget.com, social media is a collective term for websites and applications
that focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing, and collaboration. In this
study, the influence of using social media is the main focus of the study.
Chapter III
RESEARCH METHOD AND STRATEGIES
This chapter presents the research method that was utilized in the study. It includes the research
design, subjects of the study, data gathering instruments which includes the construction, validation and
administration of the interview questionnaires.
Research Design
In this study, the researchers used the qualitative research method. Qualitative research is used to
study people's emotions, thoughts, behavior, and beliefs. Observations, interviews, and the researcher's
impressions and reactions are all examples of qualitative data sources.
Furthermore, in this research, the method of the interview was engaged. The interview was used to
understand and maximize the influence of social media on learning math and science in tala shs. Also,
interviewing of selected individuals is a very important method because through its researchers enable to find
out what they think about the influence of social media in learning math and science and how they deal with it.
Moreover, because the study is about human interaction and viewpoint, the results will be more
accurate because respondents are expected to give more honest answers and opinions.
In addition, this study was conducted using case study design. A case study is an analytical approach
and a specialized methodology for investigating an issue that can be used to generalize findings across
groups. Moreover, the researchers used this design because it aimed to focus and analyze a specific influence
of social media on learning Mathematics and Science of Tala SHS students especially STEM students during
the new normal.
Subjects of the Study
The research involved 5 students from grade 11 STEM in SHS from batch 2021- 2022.
In this study, purposive sampling was used by the researchers to select respondents.
Purposive sampling is a technique that relies on the researcher's discretion in deciding who to invite to
participate. Furthermore, it has the advantage of being both time and cost-effective to perform while producing
a variety of responses. In addition, this method allows the researcher to gather important and appropriate data.
Data Gathering Instruments
The study used a researcher-made interview guide as a data collection.
Interview. The researchers created an interview guide as the primary tool for data collection. One of
the methods for obtaining primary data is through interviews. Therefore, to obtain primary information virtual
interview was employed due to the pandemic.
The interview questions were designed in the English Language to ensure proper responses from
the respondents, the interview process was also conducted in the mother tongue language to get adequate
responses from the respondents. Aside from that, the responses were meticulously documented and
translated into English. Furthermore, the uses of the mother tongue language were used for the respondents to
express their answers thus enabling than to contribute
relevant information about the influence of social media on learning math and science subject of Shs students
especially stem students amidst the pandemic.
Construction. The researchers put out five-part interview guide questions. This interview question
was the major tool for gathering primary data on the influence of social media on learning math and science
subject of Shs students especially stem students amidst the pandemic.
Validation. The researchers conducted an interview guide and it is presented to the Practical
Research Teacher. Then the practical research teacher will revise some of the questions in the interview guide.
After the revisions, the researchers finalized it and proceed with the administration of the interview.
Administration. The researchers wrote a permission letter to the Office in charge of SHS to seek
approval to administer the interview to the respondents.
The researchers also asked the permission of the respondents for their study. The researchers
explained to the respondents the content of the interview that they administered.
Data Gathering Procedure
The researchers wrote a permission letter to the Office in Charge of SHS to seek approval to administer
the interview to the respondents.
After the letters were approved, the researcher started to interview and it was conducted to support the data
gathered.
CHAPTER IV

two (2) of the respondents included that social media influence them to reduce their academic stress. Also,
they said that social media taught them to be resourceful when doing their activities while dealing in new
normal learning mode set up because they can easily analyze and understand the given tasks. So that, they can
easily answer and finished their school works.
The researchers found out that social media brings a positive influence to the learning of the respondents
in mathematics and science subject. The results revealed that social influence their learning capacity and
academic stress in dealing in the new normal learning mode set up.
4.3 The way how social media influence the learning of the respondents in math and science subject.
All of the respondents said that social media provides accessible platforms that help them in answering,
analyzing and understanding the lessons in math and science subjects. One (1) of the respondents included
that different social media platforms contain information especially videos and tutorials about these subjects
that will make their tasks easily done. Furthermore, one of them said social media provides different platforms
that influenced them to search for credible sources for subjects during new normal.
The researchers found out that social media influences the respondents through different accessible
platforms that social media provide to them. These accessible platforms bring positive influence to the
respondents in dealing with different tasks during new normal.
4.4 The significant influence of social media to the learning of the respondents in math and science subject.
Three (3) out of the five (5) respondents said that the significant influence of the social media to them
was about how they learn and understand lessons in math and science. One (1) of the respondents includes
that it significantly influences the learning strategies and makes the lessons easier to.
Two (2) out of five (5) respondents said that social media helps them finish all their school works on
time in which it leads them to do their other responsibilities so they concluded that the significant influence of
social media to them was about how they work on different tasks within a day.
The researcher found out that there is a clear significant influence of social media in the learning of the
respondents such as influence that make the lessons much easier to understand and finish all school works
on time in which it leads them to do their other responsibilities
4.5 The action or activities to maximize and minimize the influence of using social media in learning math
and science subjects.
All of the respondents said that proper time management are the actions that can maximize the positive
influence in using social media. All of them also concluded that being responsible and focused on the studies
is a way to minimize negative influence of social media to them.
Therefore, researchers conclude that time management and responsible use of different social media
platforms can maximize positive and minimize the negative impacts of using social media. By having proper
time management and being responsible in using social media, they can control their selves’ in what time they
focus on their study and what time they should use different social media platforms and improve their sense
of prioritization in the midst of the new normal learning mode set up.
