Mahatma Gandhi a) Who was him? Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian lawyer and social activist who was born in the late 1800s. Gandhi studied law in London and returned to India in 1891. Gandhi stayed in South Africa for 21 years working to secure rights for Indian people. He developed a method of action based upon the principles of courage, non-violence and truth called Satyagraha. b) How was he different. He became the leader of nationalist movement against the British rule of India. During his life, he was considered the father of his country for his doctrine of nonviolent protest. Gandhi was the Mahatma to millions of his Indian compatriots. Gandhi was arrested many times by the British for his activities in South Africa and India.
