Emmanuella Akurang 101076614 LAWS 3903 A Bridgette Desjardins Saturday, October 17, 2020 In this paper, I will be analyzing how the law has impacted the sports period using my own experience from organized sports in high school, as well as Rowan's law which was implemented in March of 2018. Law is created within the sport to protect the current and future players from injuries or worse. In this brief paper, I will discuss how long like Rowan’s law is created in implemented to protect the athletes using three articles from their required rudeness I will explain the last impact on sports on a small organization like Ontario high school sports and loss impact on international sports. I have played basketball and soccer since I was in grade 5 call mom up until grade 10, I did not receive a concussion or broken bone spring ankle or spring wrist. Yes, I might have had the occasional bruises and bumps but nothing that required me to be removed from the game pain I remember when I was in grade nine, I went to watch my older sister play in one of her rugby games. This game did not have a happy ending, because unfortunately, Rowan Stringer got her third concussion that week in that game period the concussion that contributed to a brain injury and death. I remember for a week after that my sis, my mom, my dad, and myself talked about how there needs to be a concussion protocol put in place so that something like this does not happen again. My parents start the coaches were to blame for allowing women to play the game, I insisted that as a player myself if I got the chance to play the game I would no matter the state I was in. I explained that no one was at fault but rather it was an unfortunate situation caused by the lack of knowledge used to handle a concussion protocol. About a year later I got my first concussion, halfway through a soccer game an opposing player who was out of my sight tackle my period since I wasn't expecting it, I didn't brace properly for the fall and hit my head. Although to me the fall was not bad enough to have me sidelined, my coach took me out and said that I would not play until I saw a doctor. Which fits the OCSB (Ottawa Catholic School Board) concussion policy of removing and injured at leave from physical activity to avoid the possibility of re-injury during the healing process. The same thing happened when I was pushed into a wall during a fast break layup less than six months later during a basketball game. My coaches took me out of the game informed my parents as well as my fitness teacher and other teachers. So that I could properly heal before engaging in mental and physical activities. If it were up to me, I would have played in the games posted but my coaches abided by the policies and sat me out. Concussion protocols and policies like the one that the Ottawa Catholic school board abide by can help influence the creation of laws like Rowan's law. legislations like Rowan's law are designed to protect amateur athletes from and educate them about concussions in head injuries(Gurovits, n.d., p. 46). Concussion protocol like the one that the OCSB has can lead to the creation and implementation of legislation like Rowan's law. Since Rowan's unfortunate incident the OCSB and the OCDSB (Ottawa-Carleton district school board) have started taking concussions more seriously. Before the implementation of Rowan's law, the legislation was made to inform and keep athletes safe, as well as prevent future injuries. In this case regarding law influencing policy, which in turn impact sports period the creation of Rowan's law was a result of the failure to properly follow policy or understand concussions. In this case, sports influence the creation of the law, and in turn, this law will regulate a range of human behaviors regarding concussions and head injuries for time to come(Berman et al., 2018, p. 237). When it comes to sports on a global level, the impact of the law can be seen as lackluster, this is a result of little international legislation that can be applied to sport(The Context of Regulation of Governance, n.d., p. 37). This shows me that applying logic sport is done significantly easier with smaller-scale organizations. That is not to say that law on an international level cannot be applied to sports, because international law concerning spectator law, doping, matchfixing, and corruption are proof of the application of international law to sport on a global level. What I found to be interesting was how international legislation to the application of support is somewhat nonexistent. I found it interesting because I assumed international law to the application of sport on a global level would be easy because of just how smoothly international competition like FIFA and the Olympics run. But in actuality, it makes sense because creating laws that govern small organizations like Ontario amateur sports is much easier than creating laws to govern international sports on a global level that a lot of countries have to abide by.
