Notes: The Central Science [12 edition]. Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes over time. This changes carry a significant weight, considering the fact that changes in matter involved changes in composition and thermodynamic changes. The study of chemisty allows people to understand the world around us and make better decisions. Matter can be classified into many categories based on its properties. Properties themselves are unique attributes that allow chemist to adentify and clasify. Matter can be classified based on its state. Solid, Liquid and gas. Gasses- Have no definite shape and volume. They can be compressed. Molecules are at random motion, colliding with other gass molecules of the same sample. Liquid- Have no definite shape but have definite volume. They can be compressed but not an applicable amount. Molecules are free to collide with other molecules but are closer compared to molecules in a gas. Solid- Have definite shape and volume. They cannot be compressed. Molecules are held tight together, with very little room to move/vibrate. Matter can also be classified by other means: Pure Substance- includes both elemental forms of a substance or molecules of the same identity/compound. Mixture- Includes a mixture of elements/molecules, as long as different componenet of different chemical indenty are present.
