“So, that’s it?” Mary choked, her eyes
welling up with tears.
“That’s it,” Harrison replied dryly, “nothing
left to do but wait.” Harrison stuffed the test
results into his back pocket, clutched Mary’s
hand, and led her to the car as their twenty
years of marriage trailed behind them burning
with a fervor that is only possible when
extinction is just 6-8 weeks away.

“Thanks, it was nothing,” I said trying not to let
my tone show the bubbling excitement coursing
through my body. I casually tossed the baseball into
the air and caught it gingerly in my glove, the same
ball that had just managed to avoid contact with a
bat for 92 pitches in the last two and a half hours,
officially breaking a team record and securing that my
name will forever be spoken with awe and reverence
by 12-year old ball players throughout Highland County
for the rest of eternity.
“Never seen nothing like that,” Coach said lowly,
slightly bowing his head in my direction.

The lumbering footsteps were growing
louder. My head raced, heart pounded, and
eyes burned as I tried desperately to
make out something, anything in the
darkness that surrounded me. In seconds,
the steps came to a stop next to where
I was laying and I screamed knowing full
well that it was of no use.

“Callie,” Gianna called, “why don’t you come sit
with us today?” I looked over at Gianna’s table
where she sat alongside all her perfectly
manicured friends with their shiny straight hair,
white Chicklet teeth, and dangling earrings.
“Ok,” I muttered nervously and went to sit down,
but not before I caught a glimpse across the
cafeteria of my best friend, Anna, watching me
sadly from behind her thick glasses and wild curls,
a frown plastered over her new silver braces.
