Case study: Enai has worked as a rice farmer in Nigeria all his life. He used to work for his cousin and had a decent income. Enai’s cousin recently sold his fields to a global food company who have agreed to keep Enai on, but at a slightly lower rate and working less flexible hours. Hanu is part of a very traditional tribe who live in the rainforest in Peru. Hanu’s tribe lived without contact with outsiders until the 1960s. Since contact, her tribe has access to medicines and clothing but each generation sees more young people leaving to work in nearby villages. Some youths have brought alcohol back – a drink the tribe never had access to previously and therefore no tolerance of. Andy worked on a market stall in Leeds selling handcrafted jewellery. His jewellery was always popular but since he created an online shop five years ago, business has boomed. He is trading all over the world now – and instead of his family making the jewellery with him, he can pay people in India to make the pieces for pennies.
