CHRISTINE JOY V. PERION Contact Persons: MS. CHRISTINE JOY V. PERION I. INTRODUCTION/RATIONALE: A well-maintained school provides a safe and attractive learning environment for students. School beautification projects, however, can offer much more than physical improvements to the school buildings and grounds. Through cleaning and painting the outside and inside of the school and by planting new flowers and shrubs, the pupils can take advantage of educational, personal development and community building opportunities. If a school is valued, it will inspire pride of ownership among students, staff, and community members. A sustainable campus beautification effort can be a source of inspiration. The purpose of this study was to determine if campus beautification projects made a positive impact on student behavior and academic performance. This study was based on qualitative research methods. Interviews measured the perceptions of one administrator and three teachers at each school site. Interview responses were coded and analyzed to discover emerging themes in the data. In general, the teachers and the administrators Pmrms-northProjectS.A.F.Einthenewnormal 2 agreed that campus beautification projects had positively impacted student behavior and academic performance. Teachers stated that involving students in the process of improving the quality of their school environment taught pride of ownership, community spirit, and leadership skills. Students who took part in campus beautification continued to seek experiences in campus improvement. Administrators reported a positive change in student behaviors and that beautification experience benefited students from all academic levels and behavioral backgrounds. The majority of the interviewees expressed that student benefited most directly from campus beautification. Others stated that the staff was most positively affected. In either case, interviewees' overall perceptions were that campus beautification improved student behavior and academic performance. Campus beautification projects should be investigated at every school level. Projects provide a simple solution to the rising problem of aging school facilities. Schools should pursue campus beautification as a means of improving staff and student morale. District office and site administrations should support beautification efforts and allow students the opportunity to improve their campus environment. Schools should enlist parents and community members to participate in beautification projects. Recommendations for further study include the impact of beautification at the elementary and high school levels, on urban, suburban and rural schools, and into how school administrations and district administrations can best support beautification efforts. School beautification is a great way to do all of those things and more, bringing schools and communities together. It’s a way to create and preserve both beautiful and healthy environments where learning and camaraderie is enhanced. Pmrms-northProjectS.A.F.Einthenewnormal 3 Beautiful landscaping and clean facilities push students in the right direction by giving them a wonderful space to work and grow in. They come into school knowing that they’re worth something because someone took the time to take care of a place, they call home for eight or more hours of the day. Along with encouraging students to be more involved in their school day, beautification teaches students how to be more respectful of the environment and to clean up after themselves. As the community sees how well treated their nearby school is, a sense of pride will begin to consume the community. You may see an increase in event and fundraiser attendance all because of the community and their drive to keep up the school’s appearance. However, school facilities maintenance is concerned about more than just resource management. It is about providing clean and safe environments for children. It is also about creating a physical setting that is appropriate and adequate for learning. A classroom with broken windows and cold drafts doesn’t foster effective student learning. However, neither does an apparently state-of-the-art classroom that is plagued with uncontrollable swings in indoor temperature, which can negatively affect student and instructor alertness, attendance, and even health. School facilities maintenance affects the physical, educational, and financial foundation of the school organization and should, therefore, be a focus of both its day-to-day operations and long-range management priorities. The most visible results of school beautification projects are the changes to the physical surroundings. Removing graffiti from walls, picking up litter and garbage and even planting new trees and flowers will help to create a clean and attractive learning environment. Physical Pmrms-northProjectS.A.F.Einthenewnormal 4 changes inside the school could include adapting the classrooms and common areas by painting murals or encouraging the students to decorate the outside of the lockers. Beautification projects provide a unique and relevant teaching opportunity. The educational objectives of such projects could be that children learn about the history of the school and surrounding area, or that they make signs about the plants that they add to the school grounds. They could learn about the biodiversity of the school grounds or the correct way to apply paint for the murals. Tying the beautification project into the school's academic curriculum enhances the children's learning. Any changes to the school, whether to the physical buildings or to the grounds, allow the children to develop a heightened awareness of the environmental issues surrounding the school community. Discussion of how the area came to be this way, whether by neglect, pollution or disrespect for property, will illustrate the effects of people on the environment. Developing solutions to improve the area and to keep it from regressing can create a sense of responsibility in the learners and a desire to preserve the changes. Identifying the immediate natural environment and its characteristics as they plant trees, flowers and shrubs will connect the students directly to the earth. Building community relationships is an important objective, which will last beyond the beautification project. Involve a variety of people in the project, starting with the school community of teachers, learners and support staff, and moving outward to parents. Local businesses may donate supplies and local organizations, such as senior homes or the Girl Guides, may offer to help. Developing a community sense of Pmrms-northProjectS.A.F.Einthenewnormal 5 pride and ownership, and contributing to the improvement of the local environment, will establish lasting ties in the community. The Project S.A.F.E Program aims to create and maintain a positive and safe environment that supports the learning and development of all students; an environment guided by the principles of respect and understanding where the dignity of all students is recognized and protected. A healthy and safe physical school environment promotes learning by ensuring the health and safety of students and staff. The physical school environment encompasses the school building and its contents, the land on which the school is located, and the area surrounding it. The importance of Project S.A.F.E Park is to implement the importance of awareness about Project S.A.F.E program of the school in terms of health and safety. A well maintained school provides a safe and attractive learning environment for students. Project S.A.F.E, however, can offer much more than physical improvements to the school building and grounds. Through cleaning and repainting the outside and inside of the school and by planning a school park which provides students and teachers an opportunity to take advantage of educational, personal development and building opportunities.
