Thesis Statement -it is the central idea of the text, and it summarizes the topic and the arguments of the writer about the topic. It can be one or two sentences. Thesis Statement can be explicit or implicit. Explicit – it expresses the main idea/central idea clearly and directly in the text. Implicit – it does not clearly express the main idea/central idea of the text. Components of a Thesis Statement Topic – General subject of the text or an essay. Example: Coronavirus Position (controlling idea) – your view, opinion or your feeling. Example: People should strictly follow health protocol. Reason/s (sub-topic) – Explanation or justification of your position. Example: to prevent the spread of the coronavirus Key Elements for a strong Thesis Statement It is NOT a FACT Weak: Philippines is a tropical country. (Fact) Strong: The Philippine is a good place for travel vloggers because of its beautiful beaches. It is NOT a QUESTION Weak: What are the advantages of keeping a pet at home? Strong: A person who wants to live happily in life should own a pet because of their ability to help decrease depression, stress and anxiety. It is NOT an ANNOUNCEMENT Weak: This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of owning a pet. Strong: Owning a pet brings good than burden because they can lower stress levels, make one feels safe and teach their owners responsibility. It is NOT too BROAD Weak: Too much alcohol consumption is not good for the health. Strong: Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk to health problems as it may cause liver damage, stomach distress and even cancer. It is a COMPLETE SENTENCE. It REQUIRES SUPPORT. It TAKES STAND. It is ARGUABLE
