DEFINE THE ASSIGNED EM
Ultraviolet is a form of electromagnetic radiation that causes sunburn and the glowing
effect on black-light posters. However, excessive UV radiation exposure harms living
tissue. UV radiation is present in sunlight and constitutes about 10% of the total
electromagnetic radiation output from the Sun.
DESCRIBE THE ASSIGNED EM IN TERMS OF
WAVELENGTH, FREQUENCY, AND ENERGY.
• Occurs between wavelengths of about 400 nanometers and 10 nanometers,
• With a frequency of 7.5 x 10^14 Hz to 3 x 10^16 Hz. The UV region covers the
wavelength range of 100-400 nm and is divided into three bands: UVA (315-400
nm), UVB (280-315 nm), and UVC (100-280 nm) based on their wavelengths. UVA
rays have the longest wavelengths, followed by UVB, and UVC rays which have
the shortest wavelengths. UVA and UVB radiation can both affect health, but UVA
penetrates deeper into the skin.
ARE THERE HUMAN HEALTH RISKS FROM EXPOSURE (OR
OVEREXPOSURE) TO ULTRAVIOLET?
• Yes, continuous and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet rays can be hazardous to
health. This is because it affects human skin in several ways and changes the basic
structure of the skin which causes several problems to it. Not only is the skin affected,
but the organs in the body also suffer damage because of continuous exposure to the
sun’s harmful rays as well as the ones used for medical purposes.
DESCRIBE THE MAIN RISK(S).
Sunburn is a sign of short-term overexposure it makes your skin red. pain, itching, swelling,
nausea, and fatigue, if the sunburn is severe, while premature aging and skin cancer are side
effects of prolonged UV exposure. UV exposure also increases the risk of potentially blinding
eye diseases if eye protection is not used. Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to serious
health issues, including cancer.
Describe common sources of exposure (or overexposure) to ultraviolet.
For most individuals, the main source of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the sun.
Some artificial sources of UV radiation include tanning beds which are used to darken the
skin, mercury vapor lighting, often found in stadiums and school gyms also halogen,
fluorescent, and incandescent lights.
DESCRIBE A TECHNOLOGY, DEVICE, OR
BEHAVIOR THAT CAN BE USED FOR PROTECTION
OR TO DECREASE EXPOSURE.
• Things like umbrellas, clothes, or even sunglasses can protect us from exposure to UV.
• An obvious but very important way to limit your exposure to UV light is to avoid being
outdoors in direct sunlight for too long. This is particularly important between the hours of 10
am and 4 pm when UV light is strongest.
• UV radiation, in the form of lasers, lamps, or a combination of these devices and topical
medications that increase UV sensitivity, is sometimes used to treat patients with certain
diseases who have not responded to other methods of therapy. Also known as phototherapy,
this method of UV exposure is performed by a trained healthcare professional under the
supervision of a dermatologist. Studies suggest that phototherapy can help treat
unresponsive and severe cases of several diseases. Phototherapy involves exposing a
patient to a carefully monitored dose of UV radiation on a regular schedule.
GIVE ANOTHER APPLICATION OF THE ASSIGNED EM
ASIDE FROM WHAT IS GIVEN BELOW.
• Ultraviolet radiation is a known risk for skin cancer;
however, some cancerous skin conditions can be
treated by using UV light.
• According to Cancer Research UK, it has been
shown that patients receive drugs called psoralens,
or a procedure called psoralen ultraviolet light
treatment (PUVA) which react to a UVA light
treatment and slow the growth of cells of skin
lymphoma as well as eczema, psoriasis, and
vitiligo. UVA enables it to penetrate deeper parts of
the skin due to its longer wavelengths, making it
the favorable choice for certain areas of the body.
ď‚· In terms of the field, Chemistry, scientists utilize UV in analyzing the chemical
structure of any compound by color changes. By using a machine,
Spectrophotometer, a machine that is much more sensitive than the human eye, it
passes a beam of UV light through a solution and reveals the level of radiation that
is absorbed by the compound using color changes. This kind of process is often
used in hospitals, water quality control laboratories, and biological plants.
ULTRAVIOLET: DESCRIBE HOW ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION IS USED
IN TANNING BED TECHNOLOGY.
A tanning bed for indoor tanning is a machine
used to produce cosmetic tan by imitating the
sun’s Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A tanning bed
emits 95% UVA (Ultraviolet A (UVA) has a
longer wavelength. It is associated with skin
aging) and 5% UVB (Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a
shorter wavelength. It is associated with skin
burning) although some manufacturers
produce filters than can only produce UVA
because UVB rays are carcinogenic, it has the
potential to cause cancer.
Ultraviolet A rays (UVA)
Most UVA radiation reaches Earth’s
surface. UVA rays penetrate your skin more
deeply than the UVB.
UVA rays cause skin aging, and eye
damage and can lower your body’s ability to
fight off illness. UVA rays also contribute to
the risk of skin cancer.
ď‚·Ultraviolet B rays (UVB)
The amount of UVB rays that reach the
Earth’s surface depends on latitude,
altitude, time of year and other factors. UVB
rays cause sunburns, skin cancer, skin
aging, and snow blindness (a sunburn to
your cornea) and can lower your body’s
ability to fight illness.
• The UV radiations are produced using bulbs with UV or UV lamps. They lead to
faster melanin production of your body than what happens under the sun that is
giving golden color to your skin.
• A tanning bed may contain 10-15 lamps beneath the bed. Each lamp consumes
electric power of 100 to 200 watts to illuminate. They use a choke ballast inductor to
regulate the rate of current flowing through the bulbs that produces high amount of
UV radiations that contains both the UVA and UVB.
