Chinese for the Global Community is specially written for anyone who seeks to learn about the Chinese cultures and people, and to use this knowledge and the Chinese language in the context of the global community. A good textbook should show a steady level of progression, i.e., simple lessons should be followed by more difficult and complex ones. The contents should also reflect all aspects of the language so that learners can come to communicate effectively in the language. The most important aim of learning another language is to be able to exchange ideas with people of another culture. In order to achieve this, one needs to learn about the culture of the people you wish to communicate with. From this perspective, a good textbook should contain rich cultural content. It should also provide the learner with a variety of exercises and reference material so that they can get more practice in using the language. It was in accordance with the above principles that we compiled this textbook series. It was compiled by a team of distinguished Chinese and American scholars who are experts in both Chinese language teaching and subjects such as educational psychology, Chinese history, and culture. If you want to go a step further in learning Chinese, this textbook series is made for you. If you feel that Chinese is too difficult, then this textbook series can help you feel more confident from the beginning. If you already have some knowledge of Chinese and would like to go on learning, then this textbook series is also suitable for you. We are keen to hear feedback from students, teachers and others who use this textbook series on how to improve it. This will be a great help to use and will also help in strengthening friendship between the Chinese and American people. XU Jialu iv Foreword Jia You! Chinese for the Global Community is a full-year program for intermediate students of Chinese. It is designed for college students in a rigorous second-year college Chinese program, as well as senior high school students preparing for the AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam. It can also be adapted for other programs working at a slower pace. Based on the Standards for Foreign Language Learning or the Five Cs - communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities, the program aims to equip the students both linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in Mandarin Chinese within and beyond the school setting. Jia You! provides an engaging, interactive and empowering language and culture learning experience for students, as well as an efficient and comprehensive teaching resource for instructors. The Jia You! program incorporates both well-established traditions and new developments in foreign language pedagogy. Following are some of the features of Jia You! that distinguish it from other Chinese language textbooks. Interweaving Chinese Language and Culture Learning Jia You! places a premium on communication through cultural understanding and strives for real-world use of the Chinese language. It offers rich, high-interest cultural content that is thoroughly integrated into each lesson to help students acquire and develop competence in Chinese culture. The program engages the students in an exploration of various aspects of contemporary and historical Chinese society. Volume 1 guides them through an appreciation of popular Chinese sports and games, Chinese food culture and eating habits, fashion, hobbies and interests of Chinese teenagers, changes in the Chinese family, major Chinese festivals and celebrations, and tourist attractions and historical landmarks in China. Volume 2 develops their awareness in social and environmental issues, societal changes brought about by China’s economic development, the origin and evolution of the Chinese characters, famous people and their contribution to society, and Chinese literature and arts. Students are regularly placed in a real-life context to discuss the similarities and differences of cultural products, practices and perspectives between their own culture and those of the Chinese-speaking communities. They are encouraged to express their views and opinions while considering the views and opinions of others, and to think critically about issues. Through these classroom discussions and debate, Jia You! hones students’ four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, fosters their reflective and critical thinking skills, and broadens their world view. Integrating Materials of Different Varieties and Discourse Styles A mix of authentic and carefully crafted Chinese texts of different forms (dialogs and narratives) and discourse styles (formal and spoken) are incorporated in Jia You! to expose students to a broad range of written texts. v Students develop their reading proficiencies through exposure to highly contextualized written materials ranging from menus, recipe, notices, and signs, to more densely texts excerpted or adapted from newspapers, magazine articles, interview transcripts, letters and essays. The reading texts in Jia You! are current, engaging, informative and thought-provoking; they promote classroom discussions and individual learner’s self reflection. Each lesson has a supplementary text that is carefully chosen to complement the theme of the lesson. This allows students to practice immediately what they have learned from their study of the main text, as well as develop reading skills in predicting and guessing the meanings of new words and phrases from context. The accompanying text audio program helps students develop their aural proficiencies. Integrating Content-based Vocabulary, Grammar, Exercises and Activities In keeping with Jia You!’s content-driven, functional pedagogical focus, the vocabulary, grammar and common expressions are presented based on their relevance to the theme of each unit, and then practiced in highly contextualized, meaningful and relevant exercises and classroom activities. Besides traditional exercises such as fill-in-the-blank, sentence completion, paraphrasing and writing tasks that help students build a solid grammatical foundation, the program also offers a broad range of communicative exercises, such as instructor-directed discussions, paired or group discussion, role-play, games, interviews, and debate topics that give students the chance to interact with and support one another in the learning process. Through these activities, students learn to initiate and sustain conversations, and communicate appropriately in a variety of social and cultural contexts. Collaborative group projects and research projects that involve direct contact with the community and the use of internet technology are also incorporated in Jia You! to encourage students to become independent and lifelong language learners. Integrating process pedagogy into speaking and writing tasks To make writing and speaking tasks less daunting and much more manageable for the students, the Jia You! program breaks each communicative task into its constituent parts, and provides prompts or questions at every step of the process to help initiate ideas and guide students through the process of organizing their thoughts and presenting information. The students are also encouraged to make use of the grammar structural patterns and new vocabulary they have learned from the study of the main text in these communicative tasks. Integrating Simplified and Traditional Characters Considering that students of intermediate Chinese might come from different backgrounds and some may have learned the Simplified form and others the Traditional form, the Student Textbooks and Workbooks of Jia You! are compiled in both forms. The Simplified and Traditional forms are presented side by side to help students easily make an association between the two and in the process, learn to read both forms. vi Designing the Workbook around the AP Chinese Language & Culture exam format Exercises in the Student Workbook are designed around the lesson topics and are modeled after the question types in the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam. The exercises test students on cultural knowledge and all four language skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Students who are sitting for the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam can get extensive practice on the exam format. Those who are not will find the Workbook a useful tool for assessing their grasp of the materials learned in the lesson and for furthering their communication and language skills. Each Instructor’s Resource Manual also contains two complete sets of practice tests, to be taken in the middle of term and at the end of term. Empowering the instructors with a comprehensive teaching resource Besides providing an engaging, interactive and learner-centered language and culture learning experience for students, Jia You! also offers a comprehensive teaching resource for instructors. The Instructor’s Resource Manual provides notes on the Five Cs (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities), tips for teaching the four skills, helpful suggestions on how to implement and expand contents of text, correlation to supplementary/ auxiliary materials, expanded notes on vocabulary terms, sentence patterns and expressions, suggestions on classroom activities, supplementary cultural information, as well as answer keys to Workbook exercises and tests. The bound-in CD-ROM provides additional tests and supplementary materials in PDF formats that the instructor can quickly print and use. The CD-ROM features midterm and final exams for two-semester programs, supplements, and a test audio component for listening comprehension. The Video on DVD supplement contains short clips that complement the theme of each lesson. It helps immerse students in the sound and color of life in Chinese speaking cultures. vii About the Authors SERIES EDITOR Prof. XU Jialu 主编 许嘉璐 教授 中国著名语言学家,北京师范大学汉语文化学院院长,汉语言文字学、语言学及应 用语言学教授,在汉语言、汉语教学、中国文化及中文信息处理等研究领域成就卓 著。 Professor XU Jialu is the principal of the College of Chinese Language and Culture at Beijing Normal University. Hopefully, the whole book will follow the same spirit and I would like to be the first one to recommend this series to our school district and teachers in other districts for adoption.” - Baocai (Paul) Jia, Cupertino High School, CA “The book design and layout are very attractive in comparison with the books I have used. The combination of the clear illustrations and interesting page layouts attract student’s attention… The unit I reviewed provides students with interesting cultural information. My students love it!” - Xing King , The Bishop School, CA “I really like this part [supplementary culture notes in Teacher’s Resource Manual] . Not every Chinese teacher knows all the culture aspects. For a teacher who’s abroad for a long time, the notes on the recent culture not only provide information but also some new vocabulary words (such as proper nouns).” - Yangyang Daniell, The Lawrence School, NJ “I like the scope and sequence, a good balance between aspects of personal, social life and those of important Chinese culture and traditions… I like the general structure of “warm-up”, “think aloud”, “main text (with paragraphs and dialogs)”, practice (vocabulary, grammar, common expressions)”, and “speak & write”. It flows well and should be easy for teachers to use because the arrangement itself presents a good pedagogical sequencing.” - Dr Chao-mei Shen, Rice University, TX “The book is innovative, original and pedagogically sound. One of the highlights of this textbook is the content. It is interesting, informational, and fun-to-read. It is presented in different forms, narratives and dialogues. All the readings are coherent to the theme and present rich information in different aspects or from different perspectives. The program is indeed resourceful!” - Anonymous “The very first groundbreaking project in the development of instructional materials in Chinese! The instructional materials well reflect ACTFL's five national standards and correspond to cutting-edge pedagogy. I'm truly heartened by such a wise move toward the development of instructional materials and am looking forward to its great success." - Dr Miao-fen Tseng, University of Virginia, VA
