编者的话
对于广大汉语学习者来说，要想快速提高汉语水平，
扩大阅读量是很有必要的。“彩虹桥”汉语分级读物为汉
语学习者提供了一系列有趣、有用的汉语阅读材料。本
系列读物按照词汇量进行分级，力求用限定的词汇讲述
精彩的故事。本套读物主要有以下特点：
一、分级精准，循序渐进。我们参考“新汉语水平考
试（HSK）词汇表”（2012 年修订版）、《汉语国际教育用
音节汉字词汇等级划分（国家标准）》和《常用汉语 1500
高频词语表》等词汇分级标准，结合《欧洲语言教学与评
估框架性共同标准》（CEFR），设计了一套适合汉语学习
者的“彩虹桥”词汇分级标准。本系列读物分为 7 个级别
（入门级 *、1 级、2 级、3 级、4 级、5 级、6 级），供不同
水平的汉语学习者选择，每个级别故事的生词数量不超过
本级别对应词汇量的 20%。随着级别的升高，故事的篇幅
逐渐加长。本系列读物与 HSK、CEFR 的对应级别，各级
词汇量以及每本书的字数详见下表。 a

二、故事精彩，题材多样。本套读物选材的标准就是
“精彩”，所选的故事要么曲折离奇，要么感人至深，对读
者构成奇妙的吸引力。选题广泛取材于中国的神话传说、
民间故事、文学名著、名人传记和历史故事等，让汉语学
习者在阅读中潜移默化地了解中国的文化和历史。
三、结构合理，实用性强。“彩虹桥”系列读物的每

一本书中，除了中文故事正文之外，都配有主要人物的中
英文介绍、生词英文注释及例句、故事正文的英文翻译、
练习题和生词表，方便读者阅读和理解故事内容，提升汉
语阅读能力。练习题主要采用客观题，题型多样，难度适
中，并附有参考答案，既可供汉语教师在课堂上教学使
用，又可供汉语学习者进行自我水平检测。

Preface
For students who study Chinese as a foreign language, it’s
crucial for them to enlarge the scope of their reading to improve
their comprehension skills. The “Rainbow Bridge” Graded
Chinese Reader series is designed to provide a collection of
interesting and useful Chinese reading materials. This series
grades each volume by its vocabulary level and brings the
learners into every scene through vivid storytelling. The series
has the following features:a
I. A gradual approach by grading the volumes based on
vocabulary levels. We have consulted the New HSK Vocabulary
(2012 Revised Edition), the Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters
and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of
Other Languages (National Standard) and the 1,500 Commonly
Used High Frequency Chinese Vocabulary, along with the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
(CEFR) to design the “Rainbow Bridge” vocabulary grading
standard. The series is divided into seven levels (Starter*, Level
1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6) for students at
different stages in their Chinese education to choose from. For
each level, new words are no more than 20% of the vocabulary
amount as specified in the corresponding HSK and CEFR levels.

As the levels progress, the passage length will in turn increase.
The following table indicates the corresponding “Rainbow
Bridge” level, HSK and CEFR levels, the vocabulary amount,

II. Intriguing stories on various themes. The series features
engaging stories known for their twists and turns as well
as deeply touching plots. The readers will find it a joyful
experience to read the stories. The topics are selected from
Chinese mythology, legends, folklore, literary classics,
biographies of renowned people and historical tales. Such wideranging topics exert an invisible, yet formative, influence on
readers’ understanding of Chinese culture and history.
III. Reasonably structured and easy to use. For each volume
of the “Rainbow Bridge” series, apart from a Chinese story, we
also provide an introduction to the main characters in Chinese
and English, new words with English explanations and sample
sentences, and an English translation of the story, followed by
comprehension exercises and a vocabulary list to help users read
and understand the story and improve their Chinese reading
skills. The exercises are mainly presented as objective questions
that take on various forms with moderate difficulty. Moreover,
keys to the exercises are also provided. The series can be used
by teachers in class or by students for self-study.

English Version
Hua Mulan, the Lady Warrior
In ancient China, there was a brave and intelligent young lady
named Hua Mulan. She and her family, her father, mother, elder
sister and younger brother, lived in a small village. They were a
happy family.
Mulan’s father already reached a senior age. Being a veteran
from the army, he raised Mulan like a boy, as Mulan was
his favorite. When she became a teenager, he took her to the
riverside outside of the village and taught her riding and archery
in addition to her normal studies. During her leisure time, Mulan
liked to read her father’s military books for fun.
On day, an officer rode to Mulan’s house and gave her father a
letter. He said, “The north of our country is under attack from
an enemy. The emperor is recruiting soldiers, so all veterans
have been drafted. The conscription list has your name on it.
Considering you are old, your son can serve in your place.”
With that, the officer left. Holding the letter in his hand, Mulan’s
father wrinkled his brows and couldn’t speak a word. Her mother
said, “You’re too old and feeble and you haven’t recovered from
this illness. What can we do about the situation?”
At that time, Mulan was weaving in front of a loom. The news
disturbed her mind and she could no longer focus on weaving.
“Well,” Mulan gave out a deep sigh and said, “if I were a boy,
I could go to the battle for my father!” Then, she gave it a

second thought, “Although I’m a girl, I do excel at martial arts.
Why can’t I go to the battlefield and fight like a man?” Mulan
entertained the idea and decided to serve in the army in her
father’s place.
Mulan slowly approached her father and said to him in a low
voice, “Dad, you’re not well and my brother is too young. Let
me go to the battlefield in your place!” “Don’t be silly. You’re a
girl. How can you go to the battlefield?” her father smiled while
shaking his head. “Dad, I can disguise myself as a boy. I’m
fifteen and almost as tall as you. Dad, let me go!” Mulan begged
her father. He didn’t say anything, but affectionately stroked her
head.

Then Mulan happened to see the war robe on the table. Her
mother just sized it for her father. Mulan tried it on out of
curiosity and wore her hair like her father, then she saw a
majestic figure in the mirror. She looked like a general in it. Her
father gazed at her for a while and could hardly recognize his
own daughter.
“Dad, now I look like a boy! Girls also can do many things.
Please let me join the army in your place!” Mulan begged
again. Looking at Mulan, her father’s eyes began to tear up. He
bowed his head in deep thought and finally nodded to give his
permission. Mulan jumped for joy!
The next morning, Mulan went to the market and bought a fine
horse. She also bought a saddle, a halter, and a whip. After some
preparation, Mulan got her equipment ready. She put on the war
robe and bid farewell to her family. “Run, Mulan! Fight like a
man!” Mulan said to herself. Her horse carried her and dashed
away. Mulan never looked back.
Mulan reached the recruiting spot in the city. All the recruits
arrived and there were several hundred of them. They set off
with an order. They traveled north via the Yellow River. In the
evening, Mulan slept by the river. She couldn’t hear her parents
calling her; she could only hear the sound of the running water
in the Yellow River. Then she left the Yellow River and slept
on the top of the Dark Mountain the next evening. She worried
that her secret would get out, so she was very cautious. When
they were marching during the day, Mulan would follow the
troops closely in fear that she might be left behind. She carefully
imitated men’s behavior. When she slept during the night, she
didn’t dare to undress. After quite some time, no one in the
troops ever noticed that she was a girl in disguise.
Only once, a young soldier asked a question abruptly, “Brother
Mulan, why is your name like a girl’s name?” Others chimed in,
“He’s right. Why’s your name Mulan (magnolia)?” “Well…,”
Mulan had an idea and replied, “Before I was born, my mother
had a dream in which she gave birth to a girl. So, they simply
gave me a girl’s name.” Mulan was relieved when she noticed
others seemed to believe what she said.
After a dozen days of marching, the troops arrived at the foot
of the Yanshan Mountains. Mulan could hear the shout of the
enemy and the neigh of their horses. Mulan thought, “I would
do my very best to defeat the enemy for my parents and for my
country!”
“Attack!” the soldiers yelled, the neigh of the horses and the
clash of weapons rang on the battlefield. Dust flied, blood was
shed, dead bodies were scattered on the ground, and many were
injured in this battle. Thanks to her excellent combat skills,
Mulan always took the lead in attacks. She was admired by her

fellow warriors and they praised her as a brave warrior.
More than ten years had passed, and the war finally came to an
end. Up to that point, they had fought many battles and some
died on the battlefield. Those who survived the war could finally
return home, and they shed tears of joy.
Mulan who became a general at that time led her troops to the
capital to meet the emperor. The emperor sat on his throne
with his officials standing below him. “Mulan,” the emperor
said while looking at her, “you’re such a young and handsome
general. You have made many great battle achievements over
the years. I will grant you gold and an office. What else do you
want?”

“Your Majesty,” Mulan replied while lowering her head, “I
am still at a young age and not sufficiently educated. I’m not
qualified for an office. The credit goes to each and every warrior.
All I want is a fine horse that can run fast and carry me home, so
that I can see my parents.”
The emperor nodded his head and said, “Young as you are,
it’s commendable to perform your filial duty. Your request
is granted. You can leave for home soon.” “Thank you, your
Majesty,” Mulan left the palace delightfully.
Mulan went on her way with some fellow warriors whose homes
were in the same direction as hers. They wanted to stay in
Mulan’s home for a couple of days before they continued their
journey.
After a dozen days’ travel, Mulan’s home was near. Mulan
looked into the distance and saw two elderly people were
looking around. As Mulan approached them, she noticed they
were her father and mother, whom she missed every day. She
joyfully jumped off the horse and called, “Dad, Mom.” “Mulan,
Mulan,” her father’s voice trembled. Her mother embraced
Mulan and wept with joy.
They were talking to each other and walking toward home. In
a short while, Mulan saw their house. The small tree in front
of it had already grown into a big one. A group of people were
standing by the tree. Everyone smiled and waved to her.
Her fellow warriors said, “Mulan, they are welcoming you.”
“They are my family and friends,” said Mulan. She felt happy
and at the same time nervous. Then a tall boy ran over. He held
her hand, and laughed and cried with joy. It took Mulan a while
to realize that this lovely boy was her younger brother. “You’re
so tall now. I could hardly recognize you!” Mulan said with a
smile.
Mulan invited her fellow warriors into her home. Her elder
sister ran out of the house. Mulan addressed her and ran toward
her. “Wow! Mulan,” said her sister while looking at her closely.
“Sister, do I resemble a boy too much?” whispered Mulan.
Before her sister could reply, Mulan pressed a finger against her
lips and whispered, “Shh!” She then turned her head and said
to her fellow warriors, “Please take a seat and rest for a while. I
will be back in a moment.”
Mulan held her sister’s arm and they ran to her bedroom. Mulan
entered the room and looked around. Everything stayed as the
day she left. It was like a rendezvous with an old friend. “Sister,
my friends don’t know I’m a girl. Now I will dress woman’s
clothes and surprise them,” said Mulan who smiled at her sister
mischievously.

Mulan undressed her war robe and put on her old clothes. She
sat down in front of the mirror, applied some cosmetics, combed
her pitch black hair and styled her hair like a young lady. She
pushed the door open and saw that her father and her friends
were having a nice conversation, her mother and brother were
preparing dinner to celebrate the occasion.
Mulan walked out her room with her head lowered. Everyone’s
attention was drawn to this beautiful young woman. “Ah?” her
friends exchanged looks of surprise. They gazed at Mulan with
wide-open eyes, trying to figure out who she was.

“You’re Mulan…?” “Oh! Mulan, you’re a girl!” “I didn’t
know you were a woman after being together for such a long
time!” “Mulan, you’re such an extraordinary person! You have
outperformed all the guys.” “Now Brother Mulan became Sister
Mulan!” Fits of laughter flew out of Mulan’s house.
Mulan’s mother got the dinner ready. When they were having
dinner, Mulan’s friends shared many stories about the troops
with Mulan’s family. They talked joyfully, just like a big family.
After a couple of days, Mulan’s friends were going home. Mulan
saw them off and accompanied them a while. “Goodbye, Mulan,
we will come to see you often,” her friends bid her farewell.
Mulan watched them as they faded into the distance and then
returned home.
Afterwards, Mulan, her father and mother, her brother and sister
lived a happy farmer’s life in their village.
