Intro to Visual Art Unit – Lesson 1 – Foreshortening: Creating 3D space in 2D images. Date: Tuesday, January 14 Grade: 8 Subject: Visual Art ST: Kahla Yzerman Big Idea: Creating 3D space in a 2D Image Outcomes: 1. Use vocabulary related to 2D and 3D image development 2. Create images that: combine and emphasize particular visual elements and principles of art and design Materials: Foreshortening handout, pencils, paper and rulers Step... Time Teacher does... Student does... Mental Set/ Hook Introducing myself TRANSITION Move into your seats, take a look at the handout on your table. Share Objective/Purpose Strategies for how we can create 3D space in a 2D image. Modeling/ Demonstrating “I Do” Demonstrate on the board creating a vanishing point and showing foreshortening on some shapes. TRANSITION Get into pairs for the next activity. Activity “We Do” With a partner, you will sit across from one another and draw each other from the shoes up to the head. Divide your page into 3 sections, the shoes will take up approximately 2/3rds of the page – Tip: squint and examine the height of the shoe between your finger and thumb, move this measurement up to your partner’s head – notice your partner’s head is about half the size of the shoe. Tip #2: The head is your vanishing point – legs, arms and shoulders will all move towards the vanishing point. If you want to further develop your shoes (make them 3D) use the technique to draw them back to the vanishing point. Checking for Understanding “You Do” Walking around, chatting with students about the process, keeping an eye on whether they are getting the concept – both with the handout activity as well as with the shoe activity. TRANSITION Toilet paper game – facts about you. 15 minutes to work on their sheet, use the technique for foreshortening I exhibited for the 3 shapes and the first letter of their name. Move back into the classroom and Practice: Guided/Independent “You Do” Helping students to grasp the concept as they are working. Closure/ Debrief Refine the lines and glue the assignment into your sketchbook. ASSESSMENT: Complete shapes foreshortening handout Complete partner foreshortening drawing with head, body and shoes Students complete their worksheets Students complete their shoe drawings.
