Leadership Letter
Research/Develop an environment or scenario that would be ideally handled by each leadership
style. Describe the circumstances, desired outcomes and reasoning why that leadership style is
the best for that environment. Do this for each leadership style. Here is an article to get you
started with your additional research regarding when to use various leadership styles.

Authoritarian Leadership- An updated financial report is needed for a company. The boss
delegates different parts of the report to different employees and gives them a strict deadline.
Participative Leadership- The marketing team of a company is trying to create a new ad. The
leader asks for input from team members in order to make the ad better and reach more people
to drive sales.
Delegative Leadership- An agency runs ads for a variety of clients. Different employees are
tasked with managing different aspects of each clients needs on their own time frame.
Transactional Leadership- A manufacturing company has workers running the machines. They
check in with them regularly to make sure they are completing their tasks on time.
Transformational Leadership- Apple has loose leadership which allows for more creativity in the
design process, but it’s still regulated to stay within their brand.
Research each leadership style and identify what character traits would emerge as a strength
and which one would emerge under stress. Be specific with explaining your answer.
Authoritarian Leadership allows for rigid deadlines and efficient work since the employees don’t
have to make decisions for themselves. Unfortunately, this also stifles creativity since it doesn’t
allow for out of the box thinking. Under stress, this type of leadership could lead to strict rules
and punishments.
Participative Leadership lets the employees contribute and decide on important things. This
allows for greater creativity and an inclusive mindset. Sometimes this could be a bad thing
because it creates stress if they disagree.
In Delegative Leadership employees are allowed to make even more decisions independently.
This lets them be flexible and work how they want. This also means it can stress out the leader
if there’s a lot of work to be done and employees aren’t being productive.
Transactional Leadership relies on checks and balances to make sure that tasks are being
taken care of efficiently within the organization. With the right environment this can be
successful, but under stress it may cause resentment and decrease productivity.
Transformational Leadership is similar to transactional leadership but it doesn’t include as many
checks. This type of leadership encourages employees to self regulate and solve problems for
themselves. This obviously means you need employees that can handle high pressure
situations.

For each leadership style, reflect on and research which business industry would benefit from
the type of style. Be specific in your answer and defend it.
Authoritarian Leadership is perfect for when tasks need to be completed efficiently with no room
for error. This includes the military, contstruction, and manufacturing.
Participative Leadership lets employees have input on decisions, increasing creativity. This form
of leadership is seen in a lot of blue chip companies.
Delegative Leadership is used in agencies, firms, and anything to do with marketing for another
business. This is because usually there are tasks that need to be done for clients and the boss
just tells the employees to do them.
Transactional Leadership is used in businesses where creativity and innovation aren’t the goal.
An example of this would be a manufacturing company, since their goal is to manufacture goods
and not change anything.
Transformational Leadership is seen in companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft and more. The
forward thinking nature of this type of leadership allows for innovation to take place.
