Checklist for Visual Texts Utilize the following questions to address your chosen two (2) visuals. Select visuals from Schoology – Under “Synthesis Folder” titled “Synthesis Visual Activity.” 1. Where did the visual first appear? Who is the audience? Who is the speaker or artist? What is the overall purpose? Does this person have political or organizational affiliations that are important to understanding the text? 2. What do you notice first? Where is your eye drawn? What is your overall first impression? 3. What topic/subject does the visual address or raise? 4. Does the text tell or suggest a narrative or story? What is the story? If so, what is the point? 5. What emotions does the visual text evoke? How do color or light and shadow contribute to evoking emotions? 6. Are the figures realistic, caricatures, distorted? What is the effect? 7. Are any of the images visual allusions that would evoke emotions or memories in viewers? 8. What cultural values are viewers likely to bring to the images? 9. What claim does the visual make about the issue(s) it addresses? 10. Appeals to the appeals? Assignment: Once completed with the above for two (2) visuals, select one (1) of those visuals and generate a closed thesis statement for the argument the visual is making. In this thesis you should include support from the visual and your own thinking (rule of 3… 1 must be from visual, 2 from your own brain). From that, generate a web which outlines your point (reasons), data (support), and importance/significance (warrant). Include the opposition and counter argument on web.
