Viral Photo Article Assignment

The article is about how a black, female photographer named Sarahbeth Maney took a
heartwarming picture of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, our new U.S Supreme Court Justice, and
her daughter, Liela looking up at her mom with high regard and respect. Maney, a Washington
D.C. based photojournalist explains in the article what she felt when taking the viral photo and
what it is like being one of few black photographers at such notable events. The article elaborates
on how she came to take the specific photo and how she related to the atmosphere through the
different experiences and emotions of her race. The article also talked about when she started to
photograph as a fourth grader and how it deeply connects with her. Maney additionally addresses
the pride she felt when so many people reposted the picture, including public figures. She
moreover acknowledges how she hopes her photography inspires other young, black women to
pursue their interest in photojournalism.
