Definition, Characteristics, Advantages & Disadvantages and Differences between the two. CAPS PAGE NO.: 17 DURATION OF THE LESSON: 1 hour SPECIFIC AIM Acquire and apply essential business knowledge skills and principles to productively and profitably conduct business in changing business environments OBJECTIVES: KNOWLEDGE: Learners should be able to understand the different forms of business ownership and be able to differentiate between them with respect to their characteristics, their advantages and disadvantages. SKILLS: Learners should be able to identify the two business entities in their local area and complete a chart by filling in the names of the entities. VALUES: Learners should appreciate the legal requirements for business ownership. APPROACH/ TEACHING STRATEGY: Discussion, groupwork, question and answer. RESOURCES: Pictures; Video Recording; Charts INTRODUCTION Learners will watch a short video recording of a Spaza Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXcyK4Xxodg The following questions will be asked: 1. Who owns the Spaza Shop? 2. What is the threat to the business? 3. What kind of business does the owner suggest with Shoprite Checkers? A discussion will follow upon the learners’ responses leading to the topic – Forms of Ownership. DEVELOPMENT: STEP ONE: Definition of Sole Proprietorship and Partnership Pictures showing business which are owned by one person and a group of persons within the learners’ environment will be displayed. The following questions will be asked to encourage discussion: 1. Do you recognise these businesses? 2. How many persons own the business? 3. Which type of business do you prefer? Following the discussion, the pictures which show businesses owned by one person will be grouped together and those owned by more than one person will be grouped together. Before defining the types of ownership, learners will be given an opportunity to create their own definitions of the types of ownership as depicted in the 2 groups of business entities. They will then be referred to the definitions as given in their text books of the 2 types of ownership. STEP TWO: Characteristics of Sole Proprietorship and Partnership The following questions based on the video recording shown earlier will be asked: 1. Who buys the goods for the Dlaza’s Spaza Shop? 2. Who keeps all the profits of the Spaza Shop? 3. Who is responsible for the lights and water payments in Dlaza’s shop? 4. Do you think one person receives all the money from a store like Shoprite Checkers? The responses to these questions will be summarized on the chalkboard and the Characteristics of the 2 types of Ownership will be arrived at. STEP THREE: The Advantages and Disadvantages of the 2 Types of Ownership: The following 2 short videos showing the Advantages and Disadvantages of the 2 types of business ownership will be viewed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxdR2sSPD88 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjmeU1voZxI The recordings will be stopped at intervals to allow for reconciliation of the facts and learners will write them down. STEP 4: Differences between the 2 Types of Ownership Having viewed the video recordings and the pictures, learners will work in groups of 4 to identify the 2 different forms of ownership and list the main differences. Each group will be given an A2 chart paper, newspaper and magazines, markers and glue and scissors. Learners will be given brief instructions on how to work in a group. The following instructions will be given: 1. Find pictures of businesses in the newspaper and magazines which depict the 2 forms of ownership we discussed. Cut them out neatly 2. Create 2 columns on the chart paper – label one column as Sole Proprietorship and the other as Partnership 3. Paste the pictures you cut out in the correct column 4. Write 3 facts on each type of business which highlights their differences. CONSOLIDATION: Each group will present their charts with a brief explanation on their choices of pictures, and the main differences between the two types of ownership. Learners will be requested to refer to their text books to reinforce the lesson of the day and read further for the next lesson. Next to each characteristic write down the respective characteristic of a Partnership 2. Look at the various business in the diagram below. Choose any 3 from the diagram. Write the name of the business and the product or service it provides. 3.Imagine that you want to start a business. Choose the kind of ownership you would like for your business. State 4 reasons for your choice of ownership.
