Reflection
My religion is Christianity. I have learned that it actually came from
Judaism. It just branched out when Christ came to offer free salvation. The
key difference of the two is that Christianity has the Old and New
Testament while Judaism only considers the Old Testament. I grew up in
a Christian family. I was raised to follow the Ten Commandments and end
prayers with “In Jesus’ name, Amen”. There was a time when I questioned
my entire belief system. After all, no one can even prove that there is a
God. But since then, I have realized that “If God did not exist, it would be
necessary to invent him” 1 because people need to believe in some higher
power to make sense of their being. All things considered, I have made
my peace with God and “I would rather live my life as if there is a God and
die to find out there isn’t, than live as if there isn’t and die to find out that
there is.” 2
1 Voltaire
2 Albert Camus
D. Choose 5 definition of religion and give short reaction about it.
“Religion is a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes,
beliefs, and practices” – Merriam Webster Dictionary
 Yes, every religion has a guide of correct conduct. It may differ from
religion to religion but I think what is universal among all religions is
the golden rule “do unto others what you want others to do unto you”
“Religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power,
especially a personal God or gods.” –Oxford Dictionary
 I agree. We believe in God because when things don’t go as planned,
we say “It’s all part of God’s plan” and it gives us comfort so we don’t
wallow in sorrow.
“Religion is one tree with many branches. As branches, you may say
religion is many, but as a tree, religion is only one.” –Mahatma Gandhi
 Yes, I believe there is only one God and there are just many
interpretations of him.
“Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich” –Napoleon
Bonaparte
 True, religion keeps the order in our society. It inputs a set of moral
values in us that we would feel guilty when we transgress it.
“Religion is like a blind man looking in a black room for a black cat that
isn’t there, and finding it.” –Oscar Wilde
 They say scientists don’t believe in God but I think it’s hard not to.
There may or may not be a God but I want to believe that there is.
Call me a fool, but I am a happy fool.
