Mrs. Robinson
8th Grade Science Lesson for Week 2
August 22, 2022 – August 26, 2022
Domain:
8th Grade
Scientific Processes
Matter, Properties and Change
Major Concepts:
● Scientific Method
● Atomic Structure and the Classification of
Matter
Level of Thinking:
Applying
Evaluating
Core Curriculum Standard:
● Scientific Processes is not a state standard for eighth grade science, however, it is a National Science Education Standard and it coincides
with critical thinking. The process of science is exciting, complex, and unpredictable. It involves many different people, engaged in many
different activities, in many different orders.
● 8.P.1 Understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container.
8.P.1.1 Classify matter as elements, compounds, or mixtures based on the atoms are packed together in arrangements.
Instructional Methods:
● Direct Instruction, Collaborative Learning, Class/Group Discussion, Modeling, Independent Practice, Guided Practice and Student centered
labs.
Differentiation:
● All modifications and accommodations will be followed for IEPs and Section 504 Plans for students. Students have access to both online
and hard copies of vocab lists. All vocab sets can also be played in quizlet format. All teacher-made google slide presentations are uploaded
in google classroom and are organized by topic. Should students want to go back and take a look at these presentations, they can always
access them wherever they are. Some vocab lists are shortened to fewer words to some students. Some vocabs are supported with pictures
to increase retention to some students.
Enrichment Activities:
● Students you have completed their work during instructional time are able to access Discovery Education, Gizmos, Quizziz, Quizlet, and
study vocabulary for this quarter.

Task Analysis
8.P.1.1
● Identify Atomic Structure (proton, neutron,
electron, nucleus, energy levels)
● Model to explain the physical properties of
matter
● Explain building blocks of matter with
understanding the diversity of materials that
exist in the world
● Distinguish between substances in order to
classify matter as elements, compounds, or
mixtures based on how the atoms are packed
together in arrangements.
● Know solids the atoms are closely locked in
position and can only vibrate; in liquids the
atoms and molecules can collide with and
move past one another; and in gases the
atoms and molecules move independently,
colliding frequently.
● Understand there is a relationship between
phase and density and that density is mass
per unit volume
