Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
Welcome to the T.L.E. Grade 8 Self-Learning Module on Plan and Prepare for
Tasks to be Undertaken!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

LESSON
LESSON 1: IDENTIFY TASKS TO BE UNDERTAKEN PROPERLY
INTRODUCTION
Computer System Servicing is a course that provides knowledge and
guides students in enabling them to be equipped and acquire competencies as well
as skills in the use of computer components and services. Such learnings like the
application of equipment, definitions as well as installation, maintenance, and
troubleshooting scenario in computers.
Proper Tool Selection
A tool is an instrument used in the performance of work. It also applied
broadly to a device that facilitates work. Tools can be automatically or manually
operated depending on the work environment. Some are used to remove or adjust
small items and others are used to repair and fixed damaged parts of the
materials/equipment.
Preparing for the task to be undertaken includes proper tool selection.
1. In selecting a certain type of tool for the job, you must identify and analyze what
are the tasks you will undertake or even the detail of the scope of the work to be
done and what is the sequence of the task to avoid confusion.
2. Training is a must in handling tools. The specification of tools varies on its
purpose, some are user-friendly and some are very complex and dangerous to use if
not supervised. To attain the safety and proper application of tools follow the
manufacturer’s guide to knowing the instructions on handling tools.
3. When a certain tool was acquired with many parts as well as consumable parts,
based on the manufacturer’s recommendation, one must understand that tools
must be selected and use according to manual instruction.
Safe Use of Tools
Selecting tools for the designated task must be used with proper understanding.
Safe practices in using, carrying, or storing tools are necessary especially on the
complex type of tools. Not all tools are simple handled some have set-up/use option
that needed full knowledge and training upon use.
Environmental Safety and Health Program requires the following:
 Tools are vulnerable when consumed or used always. Keeping them in a
good place with regular maintenance will retain its condition and good to
use.
 Always use the tools according to its manufacturer's instructions to avoid
damage.
 Before using tools remember to examine it. This can help attain safety and
avoid inconvenience at work.
 Tools are used depending on their function. Tools are breakable and prone
to damage when used against their function and excessive use.
HARDWARE TOOLS
Hardware tools are necessary for repairing and troubleshooting computer
peripherals and/or other types of equipment. This can provide safety and good
quality of work by eliminating hassle in removing or putting up parts that needed
to repair. Improvisation or wrong usage of tools can either damage the equipment
or damage the tools. Training and knowledge are necessary to apply the proper
action for safety and convenience of work in using tools for fixing as well as
maintaining the condition of tools.
Hardware tools are grouped into these four categories:
1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools
2. Hand tools
3. Cleaning tools
4. Diagnostic tools
1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools
Electro-static discharge (ESD) happen when two electrical charged objects
generated by contact. This case usually happens on hair, clothing, carpets, etc.
This friction can create spectacular electrical sparks but less light yet may affect
equipment. ESD must be avoided because of the possible failure of solid-state
electronics components such as integrated circuits. Some of the repair
centers/laboratory established electro-static protected areas with grounded
antistatic mat used with antistatic wrist straps to control the discharge of ESD.
Example of ESD tools:
Anti-static wrist strap – a safety tool that helps to prevent the
accumulation of static electricity close to sensitive electronics
or other equipment and devices.
Anti-static mat – used along with anti-static wrist strap that
safeguards an individual or piece of equipment like a Computer
from an electrostatic discharge. Computer parts like
motherboard, expansion cards, and memory devices are
sensitive to static electricity.
2. Hand Tools
A hand tool is implements used in manual operations and useful for daily
tasks depending on their functions. Some are versatile and some function-specific.
To achieve the good result of work, you need to be aware of their construction,
maintaining them like wiping, cleaning, and properly sharpen or keeping in a
proper box. In using hand tools, proper use and precision are much more
important than speed of work.
Flat head screwdriver – used to tighten or loosen
screws that have a straight, linear notch in their heads.
Philips head screwdriver – known as a cross-head
screwdriver and one the most popular hardware tools
today which are used to tighten and loosen crosshead
screws.
Torx screwdriver – shaped like a six-pointed star that
requires star bits to install them.
Hex driver – used to tighten bolts that have a hexagonal
(six-sided) head. Hex bolts should not be over-tightened
because the thread of the bolts can be stripped.
Needle-nose pliers – used to hold small parts also for
grasping and bending thin wires.
Wire cutter – used to strip and cut wires and look like
nipper with sharp edge or blades for cutting.
Tweezers – used to manipulate small parts and usually
held between the thumbs and index fingers.
Part retriever – used to get small parts on unreachable
locations or narrow places.
Flashlight – lighten location or areas where you cannot
see.
3. Cleaning Tools
The computer part is different from other equipment. Maintaining and
cleaning components need appropriate cleaning tools to avoid damaging some
parts. These cleaning tools can be applicable depending on the quality of parts.
Examples:
Lint - free cloth – an especial type of cloth used in cleaning
dirt on computer equipment without getting ESD.
Compressed air – used to remove dust and debris on the
equipment without touching the equipment.
Cable ties – is used to organize cables to avoid getting tangled.
It is commonly made of plastic, nylon, or rubber.
Parts organizer – used to hold small parts and prevents them
from getting mixed together and to organize screws or fastener.
4. Diagnostic Tools
Computers and other types of equipment need development and upgrades.
The generations of the computer vary from user friendly to a very complex one.
Although innovation fits the modern world yet not far from error and problem-free.
Diagnostic tools are used to identify the electronic or electrical problems of
computers. Here are the popular tools for checking computer problems:
Multimeter – indispensable tool used for testing,
diagnosing, and troubleshooting circuits, components,
and devices.
Loopback Adapter – used to test ports like parallel USB
and network ports to identify network and network
interface card issues.
