TYPES OF DEGREES OF COMPARISON
A) There are three degrees of comparison: positive, comparative and superlative
B) POSITIVE DEGREE
When we describe one person or thing, we use the positive degree.








Let’s look at an example of a sentence that describes a person.
Akbar was a great king.
The positive adjective (great)is used to describe Akbar.
Let’s look at another sentence; She is a sweet girl.
This sentence shows the use of ‘sweet’ in the positive degree.

Can you think of other examples?
QUESTION
 But what happens when you want to compare Eva to someone else or the cheetah to another animal ?
 To compare Eva to John, we’d use the comparative adjective.
 To compare the cheetah to another animal, you’d also use the comparative degree.
 This means that the word has to change.
FORMING THE COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVE

There are two ways of forming the comparative adjective.
THE FIRST WAY

Add ‘er’ to the end of the adjective (ONE SYLLABLE). WE ALWAYS USE THE WORD THAN AFTER THE
ADJECTIVE.
 Let’s look at this example: Eva is (smart) smarter than John.
 What did we do? We added‘er’ to the word smart
 Let’s look at another example: The cheetah is faster than the leopard
 The third example:
 This book is longer than yours
 The Italian restaurant is cheaper than Jamie Oliver’s restaurant.
 Use these comparative adjectives to make sentences:
 A) shorter
 B)sweeter
 C)older
THE SECOND WAY
 , Add more/less to the front of the adjective (one syllable)
 Let’s look at this example: She is more beautiful than her sister.
 What did we do? We added more infront of the adjective ‘beautiful.’
 Another example: My history class is more interesting than my math class.
 What did we do to change the adjective? We add more infront of the word ‘ interesting.
 New York is more expensive than Seattle to visit.
 A rose is more beautiful than a daisy.
 A pint is less than a quart.
 Learning Spanish is less difficult than learning English.
SUPERLATIVE DEGREE  WHEN WE USE IT
We use the superlative degree when we compare more than two persons or things with one another.
 HOW IT IS FORMED
We form the superlative by adding the est to the end of the word.
 For example: She is the smartest girl in our class.
 I am the shortest person in my family.
 Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system.
Add ‘most/least‘ to the front of the word.
I can’t find my most comfortable jeans.
This is the most interesting book I have ever read.
This is the least interesting game I have played.
James is the least worried about the game.
Application
Identify the degrees of comparisons used in the sentences.
Just say positive degree, comparative degree or superlative degree if the sentences fall under one of the
three.
1. I guess I’d rather buy this pair of shoes. It’s cheaper than the other. Comparative
2. Mexico City is the coldest city in the country. Superlative
3. My mother prepares the most delicious afritada in town. Superlative
4. The lion is a wild animal. Positive
5. Owl is more active at night. Comparative
RULE TWO (Adjective ends in e)
 Not all comparative and superlative adjectives are formed by adding er and est.
 When the adjective ends in e: able,brave, fine, large, noble,white, pure,safe
 just add r and st will work just fine.
 Example: The Suez canel is wide; The wider, widest,
EXERCISE (ONE SENTENCE)
Let’s work on this example
 The pelican was large.
 The crane was larger than the pelican and the ostrich was the largest of the three.
RULE THREE
 We have our base rule no. 3.
 When the adjective ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel.
 we double the last consonant and add er or est.
 When we compare a grizzly, a panda and a racoon.
The racoon was fat, the panda was fatter than the racoon and the grizzly was the fattest of the three.
Fat - double the consonant before adding er or est

2. Think of adjectives we can use to describe these pictures.
3. For me it’s the word ‘hot’.
4. Describing the coffee - It is hot
5. Compare the fire with the coffee - The fire is hotter than the coffee.
6.Compare all the three. Which do you think is the hottest? Obviously its the son.
The son is the hottest among the three.
RULE FOUR
 When the adjective ends in y
 For example dry, easy, happy, pretty, heavy, wealthy, busy, lazy.
 Change the y to I and add er and est to make the comparative and superlative adjectives.
 Three kids in a playground.
 The boy is happy,
 The kid in the sandbox is happier.


The girl climbing the monkey bar is the happiest.
Now is that rule easy, easier or easiest to remember?

most delicious.
