Course Website: Blackboard
Textbook: Charles Jones Macroeconomics, 5th edition.
Prerequisites: ECN101, ECN102 or ECN203
Course Description: National product and income concepts, measurements, and relationships; interrelationships
of the major segments of the national economy; forces affecting the general level of economic activity. Quantitative
skills requirements of liberal arts core recommended.
Course Rationale: Macroeconomics is a field of study that has answered many questions such as: why are some
countries so much richer than others? how severe was the recession following the financial crisis? how does monetary
and fiscal policy stabilize the economy? This course will provide you with a broad understanding of the current state
of knowledge in macroeconomics.
Learning Objectives: Students will: analyze what drives the differences in living standards across countries,
examine how the macroeconomy adjusts to shocks in the short-run, deduce how individual actions aggregate to
affect the macroeconomy, and produce a report evaluating a foreign country’s long-run macroeconomic prospects
and short-run macroeconomic stability.

The final grades may be curved depending on class performance. The curve can only help you, in the sense that
90% or higher is guaranteed to be an A, 80% or higher will be at least a B, and 70% or higher will be at least a C.
Depending on how the rest of the class does, 89% could be an A- or a B+.
Borderline grades, whether between a C and a D, or an A and a B, will be determined based on your attendance
and participation in class. I have a good idea of who attends class regularly and who does not, who has asked
questions in class or office hours, etc.
Group Project: There is a group project on the macroeconomic environment of a foreign country that counts as
20% of your course grade. There are two components to this: a presentation and a report about the project. This
group project will be discussed in more detail later in the semester.
Quizzes and Problem Sets: Both will provide practice on questions that will be similar to those on the exams.
The quizzes will be open-note, open-book on Blackboard. Class participation will also factor into the quiz and
problem set grade. Any student that misses more than 3 classes will have a 20% penalty on these grades.
