Word Limit ※ Note revised guidelines
Writing succinctly is an important skill in academic writing. Keep strictly to word limits as no
allowance will be given. Any content written beyond the word limit will not be marked.
Tables, figures, and in-text citations are included in the word count whilst the reference list and
appendices are not.
English Competency
Most TMAs have 5% of the total marks allocated to assessing English competency. It is
important that you use an appropriate academic writing style, and write clearly using correct
grammar, punctuation and spelling. British spelling is recommended.
Referencing
Follow the APA7 format as described in the “PSY Referencing Guide”. Appropriate in-text
citations and an accurately formatted Reference section are expected. FIVE (5) marks have
been allocated for this component. More information about formatting in APA7 can be found
in the APA website: http://www.apastyle.org/index.aspx.
Plagiarism and Collusion
The University takes a very serious view of plagiarism and collusion. Both are very serious
academic offences. The definitions and penalties of plagiarism are outlined in your Student
Handbook under Academic Rules and Regulations.
All assignments are to be completed on your own. You may discuss the TMA with your coursemates, but the assignment must be written up independently. Do not share your notes, draft or
final TMA with anyone before the marked TMAs are returned to you. You are strongly advised
to submit your TMA early and review the plagiarism report yourself, and if needed, revise and
resubmit your TMA before the submission deadline.

Avoid plagiarism by giving yourself sufficient time to research and understand the material
so that you can write up your assignment in your own words. Quotations should be used
sparingly. Simply citing the source of ‘copied’ chunks of text does not excuse it from
plagiarism. You should be aware that you also cannot reuse your own work – such as parts of
an assignment that you have submitted either to another course or to the same course – as this
constitutes self-plagiarism. Ensure that all paraphrasing is done appropriately.

Academic Poster (100 marks)
The ability to understand, interpret, and re-represent information is a hallmark of research
practice. Researchers are required to comprehend complex information and conceptualise it
into a form that can be easily understood by the target audience. This TMA is an opportunity
for you to demonstrate your competence in this area. To that end, you are invited to review the
following extract and article, before addressing the task that follows.
“In a Channel News Asia (2022) article, two television shows were put into the spotlight as
one of them was a Japanese production that was streaming on Netflix and created a lot of buzz
- and another was a local equivalent which also sparked local debate. Both shows featured
young children “who did all sorts of things on their own for the first time, from crossing traffic
junctions to doing farm chores to buying groceries in the supermarket and the wet market too”.

version created a buzz too. CNA. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/cna-insider/netflix-hit-old-enoughjapan-singapore-version-created-buzz-2634481
Apply your knowledge of research methods and evaluate the extant literature on children’s
freedom to explore their neighbourhood unsupervised, which is also known as children’s
independent mobility. Identify ONE peer-reviewed journal paper that you feel would be
appropriate to educate parents on the factors that would influence children’s independent
mobility and prepare an academic poster that can effectively communicate this study’s unique
findings. This academic poster is intended to be used in print media forms and applied to
common spaces within the community (e.g., void decks, community centres, transport
facilities).
(Total Word Limit: 500 words)
Assignment instructions:
• The academic poster will be graded against the following three competencies which
contribute to the construction of a meaningful academic poster:
o Critical thinking (making reasoned judgements that are logical and well-thought
out).
o Communication (distribution of messages clearly and concisely, in a way that
connects with the audience).
o Creativity (turning new and imaginative ideas into reality).
• Students are advised to use Microsoft PowerPoint to design the academic poster.
• All relevant information should be displayed on a single page, including the
references/reference list.
• The academic poster formatting instructions are as follows:
o All original authors’ names from the selected peer-reviewed journal paper must
be included in this document.
o Include your name and PI number at the bottom right-hand corner of the poster,
for formal documentation.
o Format margins to A1 size which is 84.1cm by 59.4cm.
o The word limit for this assignment is 500 (includes all content but excluding the
reference list).
o Main title should be 70 to 80 points font size.
o Sub-headings between 40 to 50 points font size.

study, including an abstract, a brief introduction, the method (e.g., surveys), results (e.g.,
graphs or tables, for visual interest), a brief discussion and FIVE key references from
the selected peer-reviewed journal paper.
• The academic poster should be clear and easily legible from distances of 1 to 2 metres.
• Points should be communicated in less than 60 seconds. Observe brevity and clarity.
• The academic poster should be self-explanatory and tailored to the audiences’ needs.
• It is important to consider both the theoretical quality and aesthetic appeal of the poster.
