Required Textbook & Supplement: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 11th Edition,
William E. Boyce and Richard C. DiPrima, Wiley, 2017
Class information: Additional information and course support is available on-line at Beach Board; support includes
pertinent announcements, and other related documents.
Prerequisites: Math 123 with a minimum grade of C or better
Course Objectives: Differential equation is a beautiful and highly interesting subject within mathematics as well as a
powerful tool in its broad applications to the physical sciences and engineering. Diverse physical processes from
mechanical vibrations and electrical oscillations to chemical mixing are governed by differential equations. Hence, a
proper knowledge of the mathematics and their solutions shed new light and deeper understanding into those physical
processes that cannot be obtained otherwise. This information in turn aids engineers in the analysis and design of the
physical system at hands. In this course, students will learn to write down those governing differential equations,
obtain solutions via analytical and numerical techniques; interpret the solutions in order to obtain the physical
meaning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be well prepared to handle the mathematics found
in their advance engineering courses.
Course Description:
Topics that will be covered in this course include first order differential equations, linear second order differential
equations, numerical solution of initial value problems, Laplace transform, matrix algebra, eigenvalues, eigenvectors,
and applications. Not open for credit to mathematics majors.

Cheating/Plagiarism:
Cheating and plagiarism are in violation of the California Administrative Code, Title 5, Section 41301. CSULB has
adopted a specific policy with respect to the violations of this nature (see the Bulletin or Schedule of Classes). Any
students in violation of this code and policy in any assignments or examinations related to this course shall be
subjected to the options specified in the policy statement. This may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the
course or in certain circumstances, being expelled from the University.
Disabilities: Students with disabilities who require reasonable academic accommodations are strongly encouraged to
register with the Bob Murphy Access Center (BMAC) Bob Murphy Access Center (BMAC) each semester.
Students must submit supporting disability documentation to BMAC and provide faculty of any BMAC verification of
accommodations as early in the semester as possible. BMAC is located in the Shakarian Student Success Center,
Room 110 and can also be reached by phone at (562) 985-5401 or via email at bmac@csulb.edu. The policy of the
CSU is to make its programs, services, and activities accessible to students, faculty, staff, and the general public, with
disabilities who visit or attend a campus-sponsored event.
Remarks:
• Students are responsible for all announcements and materials covered during their absence.
• The instructor or office staffs have no power to add or change a class for a student. Only the student can add or
change his/her class by going to MyCSULB account or in person at Enrollment Service during the registration
period.
• Class Safety During COVID
To facilitate safe and comfortable in-person learning environments:
1. Students are required to be fully vaccinated and boosted to physically access the classroom or class-related
experiences on- or off-campus, unless approved for a legitimate exemption. Those with a legitimate exemption
are required to test weekly.
2. All those physically attending class or class-related experiences on or off campus must wear approved face
coverings over both the nose and mouth while indoors (see https://www.csulb.edu/covid-19).
3. All students, faculty, and guests physically attending class or class-related experiences on or off campus
must complete the daily COVID-prescreen via their SSO prior to arrival. Check marks can be confirmed daily
by professors and University staff.
4. Not following COVID-19 health & safety policies (including failing to attest vaccination status, failing to
weekly test, etc.) can result in suspension from BeachBoard and/or disciplinary sanctions through Student
Conduct. Faculty are not expected to make course accommodations for BeachBoard suspensions due to the
student’s failure to comply with University policies.
5. Students may be asked to sit in the same seat for each class meeting to facilitate contact tracing.
Be sure to regularly check your CSULB email and the CSULB Covid-19 website both for the most up-to-date
information and for specific information on protocols for exposures to or positive tests for COVID-19.
Withdrawal Policy &Important Dates:
Students may drop classes during the first two weeks of classes (until 2/2/2022) and the class will not appear on their
permanent records.
If withdrawing after the second week of instruction, a “W” will appear on the student’s permanent record. Students
should consider the consequences of this action and consult their academic advisor. After the second week of the term,
withdrawals can impact progress towards degree, future course enrollment, and future financial aid eligibility. In
addition, the withdrawal units will be applied to the student's Undergraduate Withdrawal Limit (18 units over the
course of their entire CSULB undergraduate career). Students should also be aware that after the 2nd week of
instruction, class withdrawals are permissible only for serious and compelling reasons. The definition of serious and
compelling reasons as applied by faculty and administrators will be defined more narrowly as the term progresses.
Please be advised that poor academic performance or poor time management is not justification for withdrawing
from classes.
Withdrawal during the final three weeks of instruction is not permitted unless there are circumstances beyond the
student’s control in which a serious personal life situation, illness or accident prevents the student from continuing in
their classes and Incompletes or other arrangements with instructors are not possible. Categorized as a Catastrophic
Withdrawal, such requests require thorough and credible documentation, normally involve withdrawal of all courses
in the term, and are not intended to be made more than once during a student’s academic career. In order to be
considered, requests for Catastrophic Withdrawals require support from the instructor, chairperson of the department
offering the class, and the Dean of the college in which the class is taught. Final approval can only be granted by
Office of the Provost. *Catastrophic Withdrawal may be initiated at any point during the semester, but no later than
the last day of classes in the requested term. For more information, check the link below:
