Step 1 To prepare for the final backpack drawing your are going to complete at least three sketches of your backpack. Each sketch must be a different position. Step 2 Choose your favorite/most interesting positioning of the backpack from your sketch. Set up your backpacks in a similar position On a 12”x18” sheets of paper begin drawing your backpacks. Remember to fill the page with your drawing. Remember that this is a project grade and your backpacks need to be very detailed. Step 3 Make a list of words or sentences you want to include. Consider placement of the text. It should balance with the drawing and enhance the drawing not distract from it. The text could outline the backpack, fill the background around it, be written inside the backpack. Words can be repeated or written only once. Consider how the words will be written. Some can be larger, block letters to take up space, negative words could be written in a different style than positive ones. The narrator describes the little things soldiers carry—canteens, knives, photos—and gradually expands to larger items such as the M-60, to intangibles like grief, and finally to the vast setting of Vietnam itself.
