CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND BELL WORK Even after school has started these statements should be reviewed by every teacher. The biggest weakness with many foreign language visitor teachers is a lack of consistency in classroom management. Your principal is often as much interested in your ability to CONTROL YOUR CLASSES as in what you are teaching. Look at these observations and follow these suggestions. This year the first thing I must observe is your ability to control your class. Mr. Goley may also be coming for that reason. We want fewer complaints about classroom management. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IS TO STUDY THIS DOCUMENT AND TO USE IT WITH YOUR CLASSES. (1) The most important consideration is that you must CONSTANTLY keep your students BUSY. They must be kept busy and on task every moment of your time. Either they must be listening to you give important information or they must be GIVEN SOMETHING TO DO AT ALL TIMES. When they have nothing to do they talk and misbehave. Do NOT allow empty moments, in which students are not busy. KEEP THEM BUSY. (2) Next is that you must POST YOUR RULES, EXPLAIN THEM, PROVIDE A LETTER TO GO HOME TO BE SIGNED WITH THE SAME RULES (get approval from the office) EXPLAIN THE CONSEQUENCES, AND GIVE A QUIZ ON THESE RULES. BE SURE TO HAVE A WAY TO LET PARENTS KNOW THE RULES. (3) Next is that you must NEVER ALLOW ANYONE TO BREAK A RULE WITHOUT ADDRESSING IT. Last year I saw several cases where students broke many rules and the teacher did or said nothing at all. THIS IS NOT GOOD. TEACHERS, YOU MUST ENFORCE THE RULES AT ALL TIMES even if it is only a warning. (4) Next is that you must be CONSISTENT in giving your punishments when rules are broken as you will lose all respect VERY QUICKLY with your students if you do not. BE FAIR BUT BE CONSISTENT. (5) Be sure to set an example the very first day that you are IN CHARGE OF YOUR CLASS. (6) Post the state STANDARDS and your RULES and CONSEQUENCES so that they are visible in your room.. (7) Divide your seats so that you have a passageway down the middle and so that the students face either each other or diagonally toward the front. LONG ROWS OF TRADITIONAL SEATING WILL LEAD TO POOR BEHAVIOR. A TEACHER MUST MOVE ABOUT THE CLASS ROOM. DO NOT STAY AT THE FRONT OF YOUR ROOM BEHIND A DESK. This is especially important in a language class. (8) DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO MOVE FROM A SEAT WITHOUT PERMISSION. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO SPEAK WITHOUT PERMISSION. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO CHEW GUM OR EAT IN YOUR CLASS. PUNISH ANYONE WHO IS TARDY WITHOUT A VALID EXCUSE. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO TOUCH ANOTHER STUDENT IN ANY WAY. THIS LEADS TO FIGHTS OR INJURIES. (9) BE SURE TO HOLD YOUR STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE FOR EVERYTHING YOU TELL THEM. IF YOU DO NOT THEY WILL NOT THINK IT IS IMPORTANT AND WILL NOT LISTEN TO YOU THE NEXT TIME. GIVE A QUIZ, EVEN IF IT IS AN ORAL QUESTION (raise your hand if you do not understand). (Johnny, what is the reason that you can not speak without permission?) WITH A RESPONSE. (10) NEVER ASK THE CLASS A QUESTION WITHOUT NAMING SOMEONE TO ANSWER!!! NEVER ASK AN OPEN ENDED QUESTION LIKE WHO KNOWS……OR WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE…….WITHOUT NAMING SOME ONE!! YOU ARE INVITING TROUBLE THAT WAY. OR SAY RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU KNOW…….. (11) ON THE FIRST DAY GIVE YOUR SYMBOLS FOR stand up, listen, repeat all of you, walk, come here, be quiet…….etc. THEN GIVE A QUIZ ON THEM. YOU MUST YOU MUST YOU MUST SHOW YOUR STUDENTS THAT YOU MEAN WHAT YOU SAY! (12) Teachers who follow these suggestions will almost always have better control of their classes. Please take these suggestions seriously. (13) It is easy to blame others for our problems in schools. It is true that some students are very disrespectful. It is true that some are not motivated to learn. BUT THE SCHOOLS HAVE SYSTEMS IN PLACE TO DEAL WITH DISRESPECT AND BREAKING RULES. If the teacher does not follow the system, the teacher must accept the responsibility for poor behavior. FACES wants all teachers to have excellent classroom management. This is possible if you understand the following: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) Your major responsibility is to make it possible for EVERYONE to learn. Rules are made to make it possible for all to learn in a quiet atmosphere with no disruptions. You MUST make the rules clear and enforce them EVERY SINGLE TIME. You MUST not make exceptions to those who break rules. Try to understand individual problems, and why a student is breaking the rules. Ask other teachers who have the same students what THEY do. Keep parents informed of any rules broken more than once. YOU MUST PHONE THE PARENTS. If you do not enforce rules consistently EVERY SINGLE TIME, you are failing as a teacher. ABOVE ALL KEEP STUDENTS BUSY DURING EVERY MINUTE. When not busy, they talk. (14) Meet your students at the door at each class change with BELL WORK. Be sure instructions are on the bell work. Only allow about 3-5 minutes for Bell Work. You should form the habit of sending them STRAIGHT TO THEIR SEATS WITH A TASK TO COMPLETE IN A SHORT TIME. Then start your lesson. (15) Every class should be divided into MODULES of about 12-30 minutes depending on level. Do not exceed the time or you will LOSE YOUR STUDENTS to boredom and fatigue. Every module should have a stated GOAL, an ACCESS TO LEARNING (choices, cues, modeling, gestures) and a PROOF THAT LEARNING TOOK PLACE. This proof is achieved by removing the cues and choices etc., and by a short abc quiz. (16) BELL WORK should be given as they come in…put instructions on it and on the board or OHP. EVERY FL teacher should have an OHP. YOU MUST USE IT. Let “captains take up the bell work. Do not waste time taking up bell work yourself. ALWAYS LET A STUDENT GIVE OUT PAPERS AND TAKE THEM UP. GO ON WITH YOUR LESSON WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING. (17) Remember to plan your activities according to STANDARDS and the main rule: to provide a meaningful experience BEFORE you attempt a grammatical explanation. ENCLOSED ARE SOME SAMPLES OF BELL WORK. DO NOT ALLOW QUESTIONS. KEEP THEM BUSY. TEACHER RULES FOR CREATING BELL WORK. 1-In first year classes, Bell work should not require spelling, composition or thought answers. The responses should be chosen from a list, or they should underline the correct choice. 2-You should give correct answers to Bell Work immediately. Credit should be given. I suggest that all bell work be kept in a folder with the student’s name on the folder. Give credit for completed bell work. Add points to the average for completions of bell work. If a student is tardy or breaks a rule during bell work, take his bell work and do not give him credit for it. 3- BELL WORK MUST NOT TAKE MORE THAN 4 MINUTES TO COMPLETE. The purpose of the bell work activity is to get the class to their seats and started on busy work. 4- DO NOT LET BELL WORK GO OUT OF THE CLASS. Keep the folders, hand them out as the students enter the room each day. YOU MUST EXPLAIN THE SYSTEM BEFORE MAKING THIS CHANGE. (1) You are not eligible for bell work credit if you are tardy. (2) You will lose the bell work credit if you break a rule during the bell work. (3) You must be in your seat and quiet to get credit for bell work. 5-For the pictures, students should use an answer sheet or other paper. Use words or sentences that apply.
