Quest: The Burned Village ** Learning Targets: I can make observations and develop inferences based on evidence. I can make qualitative and quantitative observations accurately. Continuing your journey with Sir Isaac Newton, you and your team arrive at the scene of a village burned. It seems that all of the civilians who once called the place home have abandoned the charred shells. No one answers your calls as you offer assistance. The smell of burned wood and the element sulfur is in the air, thick and pungent, as your step through the mud and enter the abandoned village. You cross hundreds of footprints in the clay-like sludge now stained with ash. It may be related to the abductions that Sir Isaac Newton had mentioned to you earlier… Analyzing the situation, you realize that you must discover the source of the fire. It could mean trouble for the towns nearby and they should be warned! The plains surrounding the village seemed to have suffered from the flames as well as a distant rumble of thunder shakes both heaven and earth. There is a storm in the east and the area is still damp from the rain that must have fallen earlier that day. You pass one of the many damaged homes and find a kitchen where food was prepared for dinner. In a neighboring home you find paintings depicting people holding torches and wearing costumes. You are unfamiliar with the customs of this world, or if the people in this town were threatened by pirates, terrorists, bandits, or other dangers. There are swords and spears on the ground, abandoned by their masters. There is no one left in town to speak to, so you must solve the mystery of the town's fire. Objective: For this quest, you must examine the evidence and identify qualitative and quantitative observations. After you have assessed the evidence, you must infer the cause of the fire and cite three specific pieces of evidence to support your claim. Quest: The Burned Village ** Figure 1: This is the map of the burned village. Six buildings have been labeled A-F to help you infer the most likely cause of the fire. Different locations containing evidence that may or may not relate to the fire have also been labeled on the map. Procedure: Use the evidence found throughout the village to make observations and develop an inference. Answer the analysis questions. Look at the evidence sheets after answering analysis questions 1-2. Quest: The Burned Village ** Analysis- Write your responses in complete sentences to earn full experience for this quest. 1. Qualitative Observations: (2 pts.) Accept any answers that are descriptive and do not rely on counting or measuring 2. Quantitative Observations: (2 pts.) Accept any answers that rely on counting or measuring 3. Using the evidence, indicate on the village map all the locations that had fire damage using a colored pencil. Be sure to create a key showing the difference between great damage and minor damage. (2 pts) See flames for locations with documented fire damage. More flames are used to indicate greater damage. Students may have a different method of labeling the extent of burn damage. 4. Infer any locations that you’d expect to have fire damage in a different color. (2 pts) See red line indicating inferred spread of fire. 5. Based on the evidence, where do you infer the fire started? (2 pts) Accept any answers that are plausible, but the best answer would be along the western or south-western side of the village. Quest: The Burned Village ** 6. What is your evidence to support your inference as to where the fire started? (3 pts.) Accept any answers that are plausible, but the best answer would be along the western or southwestern side of the village. Evidence should be directly linked to supporting the location of the fire’s origin along the south-western corner. 7. Your Reasoning: Why does this evidence support your inference as to where the fire started? (2 pts.) Accept any answers that are plausible, but the best answer would be along the western or southwestern side of the village. Evidence should be directly linked to supporting the location of the fire’s origin along the south-western corner. Reasoning should explain why the evidence supports their inference. 8. Based on the evidence, what inference can you make as to the most likely cause of the fire at the village? (2 pts.) Accept any answers that are plausible, but the best answers are the following: -The fire started due to a lightning strike from a storm that passed west-to-east The fire started due to an invasion/attack by a hostile force -The fire started due to an accident at a celebration involving fire/torches The fire was an accident from a campsite/cooking incident 9. What is your evidence to support your inference as to how the fire started? (3 pts.) Accept any answers that are plausible, but evidence should be directly linked to supporting how they believe the fire started and they should be very specific observations that are fact and not opinion. 10. Your Reasoning: Why does this evidence support your inference as to how the fire started? (2 pts) Accept any answers that are plausible, but evidence should be directly linked to supporting how they believe the fire started and they should be very specific observations that are fact and not opinion. Reasoning should include the link between the evidence and their inference. 11. Was there any evidence that was misleading? Explain how it made your job more difficult in inferring the most likely cause of the fire. (2 pts.) Accept any answers that are plausible. These may include evidence that others found useful for their inference and can be used as a discussion starter.
