TEACHING, LEARNING TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY
ACTIVITY 1
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a study of 15-yearold students’ performance in reading, mathematics, and science conducted every 3 years.
In PISA 2018, Filipino learners ranked last in reading and second to last in math and
science.
Discuss how you can help in increasing the performance of the learners in
Reading, Math and Science through the following:
a. Teaching-learning process is a ccombined processes where an educator assesses
learning needs, establishes specific learning objectives, develops teaching and
learning strategies, implements plan of work and evaluates the outcomes of the
instruction (What is teaching-learning process, n.d.). Assessment of those
elements in teaching-learning process can help a learner in encouraging good
study habits, in increasing motivation and in developing abilities and skills, in
knowing the results of progress and in getting appropriate feedback (Ramna &
Akhilesh, 2018). It can able to determine any shortcomings and what areas needs
improvement, innovations and interventions. In that way, the Department of
Education (DepEd) can able to make a reform program that would aid in
increasing the performance of learners.
b. Instructional materials are any collection of materials including animate and
inanimate objects and human and non-human resources that a teacher may use in
teaching and learning situations to help achieve desired learning objectives.
Instructional materials may aid a student in concretizing a learning experience so
as to make learning more exciting, interesting and interactive. They are tools used
in instructional activities, which include active learning and assessment. The term
encompasses all the materials and physical means an instructor might use to
implement instruction and facilitate students’ achievement of instructional
objectives (Instructional materials, n.d.). To improve the quality of lesson a
teacher had to consider the diversity of learners in choosing the appropriate
instructional materials to be used because learners have unique ways of learning.
Any resource a teacher uses to teach learners is considered as instructional
materials. It is important because it can increase student achievement by
supporting learners learning. This process aids in the learning process by allowing
the learners to explore the knowledge they learn independently (Hizon, 2018) into
the manner on how they understand it.
c. Teaching strategies refer to methods used to help students learn the desired
course contents and be able to develop achievable goals in the future. Teaching
strategies identify the different available learning methods to enable them to
develop the right strategy to deal with the target group identified. Assessment of
the learning capabilities of students provides a key pillar in development of a
successful teaching strategy (Armstrong, 2020). As a teacher, you are responsible
in choosing which teaching strategies will best works for your diverse learners.
Whether you’re a beginning or master teacher, it’s difficult to find the right
strategy to cater the needs of your learners.
Teaching strategies vary from one age group to another. None of the method is
the best. It depends on the learning style of learners. Learners in the primary level
take more interest in the activities performed in the class. In-class exercises work
the best for this age group. Visual and auditory aids improve learning and
performance. Whereas, for secondary and tertiary levels, lectures, projects, field
work, group exercises and peer teaching are the most suitable strategies to help
them. Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences are also being considered and
integrated in the lesson plans for improved learning of each and every student
(Laraib, 2014). Teaching strategies plays a vital role in order to increase the
performance of learners. That’s why; teachers have to consider their differences in
abilities, skills, intelligences and the way they learn things in selecting the
strategy to implement. Get to know their strengths and weaknesses, as well.
d. Capacity building programs helps to solve problems and implement change by
assisting individual or group to gain insights, knowledge and experiences.
Capacity building is a term widely use in education jargon, it refers to any effort
being made to improve abilities, skills and expertise of educators (Capacity,
2013). Improving the performance of teachers for specific, restructuring how
work is organized or how services are delivered will help learners meet more
challenging standards (Building Capacity for Education Reform, 1995) and will
able to reach their full potential.
Teacher capacity or the teachers and school heads’ up skilling and reskilling
through a transformed professional development program (San Juan, 2019) is one
of the areas that the Department of Education (DepEd) is eyeing to reform due to
the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) result.
e. 21st Century Skills comprise skills, abilities, and learning dispositions that have
been identified as being required for success in 21st century society and
workplaces by educators, business leaders, academics, and governmental
agencies. This is part of a growing international movement focusing on the skills
required for students to master in preparation for success in a rapidly changing,
digital society. Many of these skills are also associated with deeper learning,
which is based on mastering skills such as analytic reasoning, complex problem
solving, and teamwork. These skills differ from traditional academic skills in that
they are not primarily content knowledge-based (21st century skills, n.d.).
If we want to prepare all learners for success, opportunities to learn 21st century
skills are necessary. They not only provide a framework for successful learning in
the classroom, but ensure students can thrive in a world where change is constant
and learning never stops (Ross, 2017) given the Program for International Student
Assessment (PISA) result, wherein the Philippines did not perform well. The
Department sees this as part of the Quality Basic Education reform plan and a step
towards globalizing the quality of Philippine basic education (DepEd, 2019).
Furthermore, they should emphasize skills and attitudes over curriculum and rote
memorization. The curriculum should aid in fostering skills like digital literacy,
problem-solving, reasoning, collaboration, creativity, interpretation, and analysis
to help the learner in all the situations he or she encounters.
Implementing 21st Century skills in a class means teachers should provide
learners, through carefully planned lessons and assignments, with opportunities to
cultivate 21st-century skills within Reading, Math and Science subjects. Schools
should be committed to doing their best to make sure their learners are ready to
impact the world, no matter what that future holds (Neal, 2017).
