Assignment - LPG Conversion
Internal combustion engines are categorized into two categories based on the ignition
system. Spark ignition and compression ignition. CI engines use diesel as fuel and SI
engines can use petrol, alcohol, kerosene, LPG, etc. as fuel. In the automotive market,
we mostly see petrol as the go-to fuel for SI engines. Kerosene and nitro are used in
small-scale SI engines. Due to numerous reasons, we see people converting petrolpowered engines into alternative fuel powered engines such as kerosene, methanol, and
LPG.
Fundamental Study
Spark ignition engines consist of a separate system to ignite the air-fuel mixture. As a
result of a SI engines are powered by various fuels. Depending on the application, size
of the engine, and fuel economy; SI engines are used with a wide range of fuels.
Scenario
Due to a prevailing situation in the country, the citizens now do not have access to petrol
and diesel. Since petrol engines can work with alternative fuel, people are looking to
convert their vehicles to LPG (Liquid petroleum gas). The company you work for has
asked you to convert a petrol-powered vehicle of your choice into LPG powered vehicle.
By displaying the LPG converted vehicle to customers, the company plan to encourage
petrol vehicle owners to convert their vehicle into LPG-powered vehicle.
Task 01 [40 marks]
Describe in detail how you would convert a petrol vehicle into LPG.
Task 02 [30 marks]
By converting the vehicle, how would you expect the vehicle's overall engine
performance to change? Provide technical reasoning for your answer.
Task 03 [20 marks]
What environmental effects can you expect to have with a LPG conversion?
Task 04 [10 marks]
If you were to choose an alternative fuel for a SI engine, except for liquid petroleum gas.
What would you choose? Give reasons for your answer.
