Academic Awards Criteria
The Year Mark is calculated as follows:

Life Orientation – where there is no exam mark for Life Orientation, the year mark is calculated as an
average of the marks obtained in the year.

Academic Awards
Academic awards are calculated using the year mark only.
GET Phase:
Academic Achievement Certificate – (6 out of 10 possible points) - is awarded to a girl in Grade 8 or 9
who achieves 80% or more in the following learning areas: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social
Sciences, Arts and Culture, Life Orientation, Economic and Management Sciences, as well as in subjects:
English, Afrikaans/Zulu and French and Information Technology. 1 point is awarded for each Learning Area
and/or subject as listed above that meets these criteria.
Merit Award – (12 out of 20 possible points) - is awarded to a girl in Grade 9 who has accumulated 12 or
more points in the GET Phase. 1 point is awarded for each learning area and/or subject, as specified
above, that meets these criteria.
Half Colours – (18 out of 20 possible points) – is awarded to a girl in Grade 9 who has accumulated 18 or
more points in the GET phase. 1 point is awarded for each learning area and subject, as specified above,
that meets these criteria.
FET Phase:
Advanced Programme Mathematics and Advanced Programme English are included as one of the subjects
for academic awards in the FET phase; however, a maximum of 6 subjects, excluding Life Orientation are
taken into consideration for academic awards.
A minimum mark of 65% for Life Orientation in CO2 (Year Mark) must be achieved for awarding Academic
Colours.
Merit Award – (3 out of 6 possible points) – is awarded to a girl in Grade 10, 11 or 12 who has achieved
80% or more in 3 subjects in that year. 1 point is awarded for each subject that meets these criteria.
Half Colours – (4 out of 6 possible points) - is awarded to a girl in Grade 10, 11 or 12 who has achieved
80% or more in 4 subjects in that year. 1 point is awarded for each subject that meets these criteria.
Full Colours – (5 or 6 out of 6 possible points) - is awarded to a girl in Grade 10, 11 or 12 who has
achieved 80% or more in 5 or 6 subjects in that year. 1 point is awarded for each subject that meets these
criteria.
Points can also be accumulated from year to year in the FET phase as follows:
At the end of Grade 11:
Merit Award - 6 or 7 accumulated points out of a possible 12 points over 2 years
Half Colours – 8 or 9 points out of a possible 12 points over 2 years
Full Colours – 10, 11 or 12 points out of a possible 12 points over 2 years

At the end of Grade 12:
Merit Award - 12 or 13 accumulated points out of a possible 18 points over 3 years
Half Colours – 14 or 15 accumulated points out of a possible 18 points over 3 years
Full Colours – 16, 17 or 18 accumulated points out of a possible 18 points over 3 years
Academic Honours – is awarded to a girl in Grade 12 who has achieved 80% or more for the year mark
in 9 or 10 subjects and learning areas, as specified above, in the GET phase; and 80% or more for the
year mark in 6 or 7 subjects in each year of the FET phase. The Life Orientation result is considered when
making this award.
Outstanding Academic Achievement
These awards are made at the annual Speech Night and are awarded to girls based on their academic
achievement to date. A year mark comprising of the first three mark orders for Grades 8 to 11 is calculated
and used when making this award. For Grade 12, the year mark includes the 4th mark order: Term 3
preliminary examination result.
GET phase:
Outstanding Academic Achievement in Grades 8 and 9
This is awarded to a girl in Grades 8 or 9 who has achieved 80% or more, in 8 or more learning areas, and
subjects (10): Mathematics, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Arts and Culture, Economic and
Management Sciences, English, Afrikaans/Zulu, French, Information Technology and Life Orientation, for
the year mark to date (first 3 mark orders for the year to date).
Includes Life Orientation, irrespective if there is an examination in term 2 or not.
FET phase:
Outstanding Academic Achievement in Grades 10 and 11
This is awarded to a girl in Grades 10 or 11 who has achieved 80% or more, in 6 or more subjects for the
year mark to date (first 3 mark orders for the year to date).
Includes Life Orientation, irrespective if there is an exam in term 2 or not.
Advanced Programme Mathematics and Advanced Programme English are included as subjects.
Outstanding Academic Achievement in Grade 12
This is awarded to a girl in Grades 12 who has achieved 80% or more, in 6 or more subjects for the year
mark to date (4 mark orders for the year).
Includes Life Orientation, irrespective if there is an examination in term 2 or not.
Advanced Programme Mathematics and Advanced Programme English are included as subjects.

End of term awards for Efficiency Cup
Girls are recognised at the end of each term for their academic achievement during the term. Points are
awarded to each house based on the following criteria.
These points are not linked to the annual academic awards system.
Term 1 - only the term mark is considered.
Terms 2 and 3 - The term mark is combined with the examination mark for each subject (50/50)
Grades 8 and 9 - Four or more Learning Area A’s. Mathematics, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Arts
and Culture, Economic and Management Sciences, English, Afrikaans/Zulu, French, Information
Technology and Life Orientation.
Grades 10, 11 and 12 - Three or more subject A’s.
