Folklore and its characters Herne the hunter, Cernunnos, The green man Herne the Hunter Herne the Hunter is the god of the wild stag in the forest and was said to have antlers growing out of his head. According to folklore Herne the Hunter was said to be employed as a huntsmen by King Richard II. Some legends say that he was wounded fatefully rescuing the king from a stag and a magician brought him back to life by tying the antlers of the dead stag to Herne’s head. As payment the magician claimed Herne’s skill in forestry. Without his beloved hunting Herne was said to have hung him self on a tree. Cernunnos Cernunnos was the name given to the horned god in celtic mythology he was the god of fertility, hunting, life, animals, wealth and the underworld. The green man The green man is interpreted as the symbol of life, rebirth and of the cycle of life that starts every spring. He is often depicted on sculptures with a face surrounded entirely by leaves.
