Rojana G. Evangelista MA EdAd Choose 1 of the following Elementary topics and corresponding Reflection Questions/ Possible Insights written up by the teacher. Think of a series of 2-3 activities that you can provide for students to REFLECT on the Reflection Question and Possible Insight of the topic you chose. Subject: English Topic: Point of View (POV) Reflection Question: Who is telling this story? How do I know? Duration: 2 Sessions Though it is mentioned that it is an elementary topic, I decided to design it in a way that can also be used at the high school level. Prior to conducting the reflection activities below, the teacher may use the following activities/materials in the discussion of the different points of view (first person, second person, and third person) and difference in perspectives: Use of POV anchor chart Sample commercials/songs with different POVs M&M’s Commercial: It shows how a group of people can perceive something as a work of art and how someone can see it as a mess from his literal point of view. Apple Commercial: It features a series of optical illusions inspired by the art of Felice Varini, which inspires the audience to see things differently. Reflection Activity # 1: POV Flip (one story written in three different ways) 1. The teacher took the students through short sample texts showing how stories can be told in different POV and characters. 2. Reflecting on the question “Who is telling this story and how do I know?”, the students compare the three texts and find clues and identify the POV (first person, third person limited, or third person omniscient). 3. The students write their answers in a padlet to share their answers with the class and learn from each other. This can also serve as a formative assessment to check student understanding. Reflection Activity # 2: To strengthen the reflection among them, the students are paired up and are asked to watch a short story video and afterwards write a version of it from a different character’s point of view. Reflection Activity # 3: Short Journal Entry After reflection activity 2, answer the following questions in not more than 10 sentences. 1. How has the narrative changed after narrating it through a different characters’ point of view? 2. Is it important to consider multiple perspectives in understanding a story? Why or why not?
