PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
Decreases the cholesterol content of bile and
associated gallstones by reducing the hepatic
synthesis and secretion of cholesterol and
the reabsorption of cholesterol
Therapeutic Use
dissolve certain types of gallstones, to
prevent gallstones from forming in obese
patients who are losing weight rapidly, and
treat certain type of liver disease
Complications
diarrhea, constipation, nausea, indigestion, dizziness,
headache, vomiting, cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose,
and other signs of infection.
Contraindications/Precautions
Allergy to bile salts, hepatic impairment, calcified stones,
radiopaque stones, or radiolucent bile pigment stones.
Use cautiously with lactation.
Interactions
Aluminum-containing antacids, birth control pills,
cholesterol medications, estrogen.
Medication Administration
Tablet and suspension
Nursing Interventions
Assess for suitability of ursodiol
therapy. give the drug in two to
three divided doses. do not
administer with aluminumbased antacids. Monitor LFTs
periodically.
