Everyone once in their lifetime has been through a difficult time when they wanted to give up.
To be successful and change you have to keep pushing through and working hard to get to your
end goal. There was a commencement speech given by Admiral McRaven and in one part of the
speech he talked about something similar to this. I can relate to this because there was a time in
my life when I had to continue to move forward. During the beginning of my sophomore year, in
high school, I had a difficult time trying to get my license.
One thing Admiral McRaven said during his commencement speech was, “If you want to
change the world, get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward.” This means that life
is not always going to be simple, and it will be far from perfect. This is an uncomplicated saying
but means so much. If people think that life is going to be easy then no one will get anywhere.
People have to work and fight hard to accomplish something great. One example for me would
be getting my driver’s license. It was one of the most difficult experiences. It started with driving
school when I forgot to take the classes so I started later than I would’ve liked. I still managed to
take online classes and pass them. I procrastinated a lot during them and got them finished later
than expected, but after that, I had to schedule my behind the wheel. This was a confusing part
since I had taken online school I had to go through a different process in making appointments
which became frustrating. I put it off for a couple of weeks and just had the thought of it in the
back of my mind. I never really knew what to exactly do so I justified not doing it by thinking I

had a lot more time. The time came where I eventually got everything figured out but I would
have consequences later on.
Even though I got everything finished and I was able to complete my last step before taking
my driver’s test; I was not able to take it as soon as I would have liked. As a result of me taking
so long in this last step, the Unite State was put on lockdown and meant everything was closed. I
finished my last step but my certificate did not come fast enough for me to take the driver’s test.
Instead of the quarantine being a couple of weeks it turned out to be months and I soon began to
lose a lot of the skills I gained during my behind-the-wheel sessions. It would have been easy for
me to just stop and wait until I was eighteen to take the test. But I decided to practice in parking
lots driving around the cones, looking up videos, and getting help from my family members
instead. I persevered through the whole situation and continued to get better. It didn’t just stop
there. Once the DMV opened up I quickly went to try to schedule the appointment but the
soonest one they had was two months away. Rather than me scheduling it that far away I picked
a new location. The new location would have the day of my driving test two weeks away. In the
end, I passed my driving test with a perfect score, and all my hard work paid off.
This difficult time really made me work towards my goal. There were a lot of obstacles and I
had to realize that if I were to give up then it would be a lot worse. This represents that not
everything will be easy and handed to you. There will be times that life will make you work for
what you want.
