1. Introduction
3/17
• Currently there are many formats for storing data for
power system simulation.
• Among them, PSS/E and IEEE Common Data Format [1]
are well known.
• Software companies and open-source groups, such
InterPSS and PSAT, developed and provides utilities to
import data in these formats into their applications.
• It has been observed that the direction is mainly one
way, importing data in different formats into their
simulation applications, but not in the other way,
exporting data to different data formats.
• This has made robust and reliable power system
simulation study case information exchange very difficult,
if not impossible.

1. Introduction
• Except IEEE CDF, these data formats are often not well
documented.
• Most data format documents are not publicly available.
• A simple math calculation tells us that if there are N data
formats
and
M
applications,
the
possible
filtering/converting routes in the above diagram are NxM.

1. Introduction
• The Open Model for Exchanging Power System
Simulation Data, ODM - Open Data Model for short, is a
possible solution.
• The IEEE Common Data Format (CDF) is not only not
flexible, is also limited to static data, which makes it
useless for dynamic and market studies.

Import/export
8/17
• PowerFactory data exchange format have features
similar to the XML (Extensible Markup Language), with
syntax similar to a mark-up language.

2. PowerFactory Import/Export
• DIgSILENT PowerFactory is a power tool that allow
import data from other power system software.
• Following format files are allowed by PowerFactory:
*.dz; DigSilent
*.dat; Data
*.pfp; Power Factory
*.dle;
Proprietary formats

2. PowerFactory Import/Export
• Projects (or any folder in the data base) can be exported
using the *.dz or the *.pfd (PowerFactory Data) file
format.
• Whenever possible it is recommended to use the new
PFD format (*.pfd). This format (*.pfd) is improved for
handling even very large projects.
• The performance of the import/export has been
optimized and the consumption of memory resources is
much lower than with the old file format (*.dz).
• All new functions available in the data base of
PowerFactory, e. g. time stamps and versions, are fully
supported with the new PFD file format.

2. PowerFactory Import/Export
• PowerFactory import/export filter for UCTE (Union for
the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity)
standard.
– UCTE-DEF,
• Limitations:
– Supports basic load flow and short-circuit data
exchange only,
– Important network elements missing, e.g. Shunts,
3W-Transformers,
– Unique identifier for network elements not supported.

2. PowerFactory Import/Export
• PowerFactory has import filters for proprietary
formats:
– PSS/E,
– PSS/U,
– Integral/DVG,
– Neplan,
–…
• Some drawback about proprietary formats:
– Version dependent, formats and data model not well
specified,
– Official test cases not available, no IOP tests.

3. Performing the
importation
17/17
• To export a project select File --> Export... --> Data...
from the main menu.
• Alternatively projects can be exported by selecting the
option Export Project … on the project context sensitive
menu (only available for non active projects).
• Projects can be imported by selecting File --> Import... -> Data... from the main menu or by clicking on the icon
of the Data Manager.
• The user can select the type of file to import from the
'Files of type' menu of the Windows Open file that pops
up.
• Additionally a lot of Import/Export filters are available for
foreign data formats.
