SURE FOUNDATION POLYTECHNIC, IKOT AKAI UKANAFUN L.G.A AKWA IBOM STATE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING PRACTICAL QUESTIONS EXPERIMENT 1: 1. List 5 basic electronic components. Basic electronic components are: Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, Diodes, Integrated Circuits, Light Emitting Diodes (LED), Switches, Fuses, Batteries, Connectors, Wires, Cables and Power Plugs. 2. Write a short note on Resistor. A Resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. The current through a Resistor is directly proportional to the voltage across the resistor’s terminals, as represented by Ohm’s law. Resistors are used to step-up or lower the voltage at different points in a circuit and to transform a current signal into a voltage signal or vice versa. EXPERIMENT 2 1. What is a Digital Multimeter? A Digital Multimeter is a test tool used to measure two or more electrical values – principally voltage (volts), current (amps), and resistance (ohms). It is a standard diagnostic tool for technicians in the electrical/electronic industries. Digital multimeters combine the testing capabilities of single-task meters – the voltmeter (for measuring volts), ammeter (for measuring amperes), and ohmmeter (ohms). 2. What is an Oscilloscope? An Oscilloscope is an item of electronic test equipment that enables waveforms to be seen and, in this way, makes it very much easier to see any problems occurring in an electronic circuit. EXPERIMENT 2 1. Write a short note on Computer Troubleshooting. Basic computer troubleshooting involves diagnosing, identifying and solving computer system problems. These problems could be as a result of hardware or software failure or both. 2. List five reasons for Computer Software problems. Corrupted or missing system files Virus attack Invalid hardware or incompatible driver. Corrupted registry Improper program installation/removal Out of date software. EXPERIMENT 3 1. What is a computer network? Computer network is a connection of computers and/or peripheral devices such that they can communicate with each other. 2. Mention 3 network devices. Examples of network devices include: Router, Switch and hub. EXPERIMENT 4 & 5 1. List two types of Ethernet cables that can be made. Straight through Crossover 2. What is an Ethernet crossover cable used for? A crossover cable connects two devices of the same type. These cables were created to support temporary host-to-host networking in situations where and intermediate device, such as a network router, is not present. EXPERIMENT 6 1. Write a short note on system software. System software helps to run the computer system which is made up of the hardware, and the software. Examples are the Operating System, Device Drivers, Diagnostic tools, etc. 2. Write a short note on application software. Application Software allows a user to accomplish a set of related tasks. Examples are Word Processors, Web Browsers, Media players. EXPERIMENT 7 1. What is a Motherboard? A motherboard is the printed circuit board and it is the main component of the system to which every other component is connected both internally and externally, directly or indirectly. 2. List 3 ways in which components are connected to the motherboard. Integrated into the circuit board of the motherboard. Attached through connectors, sockets and slots on the board. Attached through external back or front panels.
