IMPACT OF ESTABLISHING READING ROUTINE AMONG GRADE 3 PUPILS
WITH READING DIFFICULTY
Part I. Situation
Reading is one of the most essential skills that a child should develop in his/her
early years of learning. Developing the reading skill at an early stage is so critical and must
be given utmost attention because this is where the foundation lays for an effective learning
in the succeeding years. A child must have a good reading skill to have a good academic
performance.
The problem of the study is focused in finding out the importance and impact of
reading routine among grade 3 pupils with reading difficulty. This study also emphasized
the importance of parental involvement and the great role of the parents in the reading
development of their children.
There are 22 grade 3 – Love pupils of Calawag Integrated School in the school year
2021-2022. In the conduct of the Phil-IRI group screening test, there were seven pupils
who got a score of below 14 and need to continue further assessment and intervention. That
is why the researcher, sought to study the situation of the pupils’ reading practice at home
and the factors that affected their reading performance.
Part II. Findings and Insights
The study revealed that reading routine has a positive impact to pupils’ reading
development. The more the pupil will practice reading, the more he/she will improve
his/her reading performance. It was also revealed in this study that the more involved the
parents in the reading routine of their children, the more their child will be motivated to
practice reading often. Parents guidance and encouragement to their child has a good effect
to them. The pre-test and post-test had varying results. The reading routine among pupils
led to an increase in their reading performance. Thus, reading routine should be established
because reading skill can only be improved through continuous and consistent practice.
Part III. Summary
Reading routine among pupils should be established. It should be continuous and
consistent so as to improve and master their reading skill. In addition, parents should
involve themselves in the reading development of their children. Children who are guided
by their parents are more motivated and encouraged to practice more reading. Thus, leading
to improved reading performance. Furthermore, reading materials must be readily available
and accessible to the children at home. So, the more the chance they can practice reading.
Lastly, the teacher can greatly help by providing reading materials, especially to those who
have no materials at home.
