Alaska Academy Lesson 1
This lesson goes over the C.R.A.F.T clearance and all charts and
ground procedures.
Clearance
.The C.R.A.F.T clearance is the IFR flight clearance given to you by
atc the C is for clearance which is given something like this
Ex. ASA 1234 cleared to Indianapolis
The R stands for route which is the route you will take out of your
departure airport to put you on your route which at most bigger
airports is done by a SID or Standard Instrument departure which is a
route that you take out of an airport.
Ex.ASA 1234 cleared to Indianapolis via BUNZZ3 departure HACKS
transition
The A stands for altitude which is given in two sections initial altitude
and final altitude the initial altitude given will either be an altitude or a
climb via sid which means you follow the altitude restrictions on your
departure route the final altitude is your cruise altitude and is given in
your clearance after your initial altitude.
Ex. ASA 1234 cleared to Indianapolis via BUNZZ3 departure HACKS
transition Climb maintain 6000 and or SID depending on airport
Expect FL390 10 min aft Departure
The F stands for frequency and that is the departure frequency you
contact after leaving the airport
Ex. ASA 1234 cleared to Indianapolis via BUNZZ3 departure HACKS
transition Climb maintain 6000 and or SID depending on airport
Expect FL390 10 min aft Departure Dep Freq 133.534
The T stands for transponder which is the identifier atc will see you as
on radar
Ex. ASA 1234 cleared to Indianapolis via BUNZZ3 departure HACKS
transition Climb maintain 6000 and or SID depending on airport
Expect FL390 10 min aft Departure Dep Freq 133.534
Sqwk 2345
So at this point you should understand how to read a clearance what it
means and how to read back to ATC
NOTE:pls practice with your Instructor
Taxi and Charts
Taxi Will Be explained by your instructor make sure your know the
aircraft your flying and how to operate it this will also be taught by an
instructor and the charts go along with taxi here is a good place to get
charts from
ChartFox - Free Flight Simulation Charts

Alaska Academy Lesson 2
This Lesson goes over flying your departure and taking off.
Takeoff
Once at the runway you will get cleared by atc for takeoff at that point
you should taxi on the runway and take off after the tower will either
have you on course or on a heading for vectors to your departure. He
will hand you off to departure where you will be told a higher altitude to
climb to and he will usually clear you direct to one of your departure
waypoints. Here is a departure chart for reference
Alaska Academy Lesson 3
This lesson is after departure when you are on a center frequency and
at your final altitude
Cruise
When your at cruise there isn't much to do but make sure before you
sit back and relax you have your approach planned and you aircraft is
flying on autopilot without issues perform cruise checklist and you will
be fine and do expect to be handed over to other centers as you go
along.
Alaska Academy Lesson 4
This lesson Covers approach and landing
So on flights you have arrivals which is like a SID but its called a
STAR or standard terminal arrival route and instead of being a route
that takes you out of an airport this takes you into an airport. This
route takes you to different approaches such as ILS or RNAV
It looks like this
This takes you to an rnav approach or an ILS approach.
Alaska Academy Lesson 5
At this stage of the course you will learn the different parts and rules to
flying Instrument approaches.
RNAV
An RNAV approach is a gps approach that flies you on the gps runway
centerline and also incorporates glide slope meaning it will fly you on
an altitude path so you can land smooth and safe. This approach
differs from an ILS by not having a Localizer that is captured for your
runway intercept.
ILS
ILS or (Instrument Landing System) Uses a localizer that you intercept
to fly you on runway track and like an rnav uses a glideslope however
you have to tune to a localizer frequency and put in the track in your
nav radio because unlike an rnav it is a non gps approach.
At this point you have finished the
