Job Placement Final Exam 1. Your client has average intelligence, earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, is a professional concert violinist, and she has developed presbycusis. Generate a list of viable, alternate, yet related career options. Include in specific detail: I would begin by developing a plan with the client to determine an employment goal. This will likely be done by completing assessments (multiple) to determine interests and aptitudes. Assessments such as the CareerScope or platforms such as The Career Index Plus can assist the client by generating lists of job categories and specific jobs that she may perform well in and enjoy. Once we have a list of potential employment goals, she and I would consider if there are any employment opportunities that she already has in mind. If not, I could begin looking at the local job market to determine what jobs are available for that job category or specific position. It’s important to consider her interests and skills but also her limitations. Finding a job that is suitable to meet her interests and skills and accommodate her hearing loss is vital to a successful outcome. For instance, if her hearing loss is significant enough that she cannot continue as a concert violinist even with hearing aids, it is likely that she will be quite limited to only working at a job that does not place a high demand on hearing. Some examples of job areas that may utilize her educational credential and suit her limitations are: editor, journalist, publicist, paraprofessional librarian, policy analyst, creative writer, copywriter, grant writer, speech writer, archivist, medical and clinical laboratory technologist, craft and fine artist, web developers, accountants and auditors. 2. I am 26 years old and have never had a full time, professional job. To help me acquire a job, what do you need to know about me and how are you going to acquire that information, under the assumption that I do not know the answer to all of your questions? I would begin by asking you to complete a mock job application since the items in a mock job application would provide me with a general portfolio about your basic information, history, and references. After completion, we can discuss the items that were unknown. It is possible that some of those items can be found out relatively easily. Depending on your level of functioning, I would either provide you with direction to obtain the information or assist you with obtaining it. For instance, if you did not know your previous part-time employer’s address, I would encourage you to look it up online or assist you with looking it up if you are unable to do it for yourself. An additional thing that I would need to know in order to help you acquire a job is exactly what job you would like to apply for and more about your personal strengths. This can be done over the course of a few counseling sessions as we learn about job preparation skills. If you truly do not know what you want to do, we may attempt to look at the previous part-time jobs to see what worked and what didn’t and then possibly consider an internship in a community-based work setting doing something that expands on areas of interest. 3. You run a Disability Management agency. I run an off-shore oil rigging company. Sell me your services. Well Dr. Palmer, I am so glad you are interested to learn about my Disability Management Agency! My agency is a private entity that serves employers to ensure that your employees are adequately trained in safety protocol and we cover physical restoration expenses for any employee that becomes disabled and unable to work. Additionally, my company’s mission is to reduce the number of disability-related absences and ensure employer compliance with ADA. This is done by ensuring that any employee that requires accommodation is provided with reasonable accommodation. The ADA is an extensive law and it can sometimes be difficult to adhere to everything that is required by law and also focus on running your rig. That is where my Disability Management agency comes in to play. My agency works with your HR staff to meet equal opportunity requirements and understand how to report and gain federal incentives when hiring qualified persons with disabilities. The bottom line is, Dr. Palmer, utilizing my Disability Management company is an investment opportunity that you wouldn’t want to lose! 4. Your sister has worked all her life as an elementary school teacher and finds life meaningless unless she is contributing financially to her family’s survival. She has developed osteoarthritis. Advise her (25 points worth…)… Being that this is my sister and not my client, I would have a different type of relationship and different access to resources should she be interested in utilizing them. First of all, I would advise her to gather a good understanding from her doctor about whether or not she can continue to work as an elementary school teacher with or without restrictions. Secondly, I would explain to my sister about the benefits of vocational rehabilitation services and how the services may assist her with navigating these changes with her body and work. If she does have to transition out of her career, then it would be a great opportunity to refer my sister to an evaluator to take the Adult Career Concerns Inventory. Considering my sister is an educator, it’s fair to assume that she is also able to receive psychoeducation. I may choose to educate her on Super’s model of career adaptability in adulthood so she can begin to consider what she will do if she needs to face navigating the change of employment. Of course, it would also be potentially beneficial to remind my sister that her value of contributing to her family financially may be able to continuejust though a different type of work.
