Book In a Bag It was a warm, winter day in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. A boy was riding the bus with his Mama, who was tired from working all day. The boy had his favorite marble and he thought it was going to be an ordinary ride home. A commotion started at the front of the bus and neither the boy nor his mom knew why. If they only knew what was about to transpire would change their future forever. 1. This is a 1950s bus. Black people during this time were not allowed to ride in the front of the bus. They were expected to sit only in the back, no matter what. This bus symbolizes where and how the change started for the black community. 2. These are what handcuffs looked like in the 1950s. These symbolize Rosa Parks willing to go to jail to stand up for what she believed in. These symbolize the sacrifice and fight she was willing to endure to help her community. 3. This is the marble the child played with on the bus. Just like the boy was supposed to, the marble needed to stay in the boy’s pocket, out of sight and quiet. At the end, the boy pulled out his marble out and held it up, out in the open. This symbolizes the black community and the positive things that were going to happen and change for the better. 4. This is a hornet’s nest. Mess with a hornet’s nest and you will get stung. I chose this to symbolize the fight and will power of Rosa Parks and the fight that she stirred up within and for her community. 5. This is Rosa Parks. She herself is a symbol for the black community. Her determination and fight helped change the lives of everyone in the black community. Just like the little boy in the story who knew that what happened would not be gone tomorrow, it wouldn’t be and it would be something that would still be wrote about, talked about, and taught about so many decades later.
