Making a Comic Book
Over the past decades, intelligence and informed writing has hitherto being an endeavor for comic lovers. The quantity and
quality of scholarly comic writing has greatly flourished that ever before. Moreover, there is a flow of well-crafted work, which acts as
an inspiration to scholars as well as critics. The wide array of evidence has thus turned comics into a field of inquiry and no longer a
mere topic area. Consequently, the world of comics has attracted attention from various famous scholars. Such include Scott
McCloud, the author of Understanding Comics, who wrote the book after feeling that something was amiss in the world of comics.
According to him, before embarking on the creation of a comic book, it is important to have a clear understanding on the effective
application of closure, gutters, iconic abstraction, time, motion, and sound among other concepts.
Based on the terms and concepts of MC Cloud’s graphic novel, we represent the poem A Molar Dispensing Pain in a Comic Book.
A Molar Dispensing Pain
I woke up in the middle of the night with the most excruciating pain
My face Smarting, fear, fever, and pain all over my face,
It was like an atomic bomb exploding in my jaw

All my mistakes and bad decisions carrying out violent demonstrations in my gum
The pain so great, insufferable turmoil in my cheeks
The morning came, I hated seeing other people happy as I was suffering
I felt everyone was inhumane asking me how I was feeling,
I cursed them and all I wanted was to smack their face
But that would be murder, so I just asked them to leave me alone
“I am fine”
The pain crippled me, I would not do anything,
Even wailing or screaming, because if the muscle stretches a bit the head immediately explodes
I could not eat, or drink,
Then my friend passed by my room,
“You need to see a dentist”
“I’m fine”
I begrudgingly responded, hoping to be left alone

Use of Speech Bubbles, Colors, Transactions
Comics communicate in two ways, words and images. This means, the artist has to make sure that the message is communicated
effectively, otherwise it might end upmisleading the reader. Virtually, words can be communicated in various ways. One of the
method that was used in the comic story is speech bubbles or balloons. By using speech balloons we allow words to be understood as
representing the speech of the character or their thoughts (Harvey 8). The other thing that was used in the comic story is different
colors. Basically, color is added in comics to make the completed artwork more attractive, dramatic and convey various moods and
tones of the characters (Fingeroth, Kronenberg, and Manley 65). Color in the Molar Dispensing Pain, helps distinguish between the
characters, as well as display various activities such as bleeding gums. Alongside, we also used some transactions. Transactions
communicate the embodied meaning of an impairment (Ball and Kuhlman195). In this frame, the comic potrays the lady as
undergoing intense pain to the extent that her cheeks are exploding, as well as her head.
