Nynas is a global company with a strong position in niche markets. The specialisation in NSP (naphthenic
specialty products) and bitumen sets Nynas apart from most other oil companies, which offer oil as a
source of energy.
Nynas’ core competence is to refine heavy crude oil into a balanced mix of long lasting, high
performance specialty products for sustainable use. Nynas is the leading brand and global market leader
in NSP (naphthenic specialty products) and a market leader in bitumen in the European market where it
operates.
Nynas’ products support growth in infrastructure and touch the lives of nearly everyone every day
through their presence in roads, roofs, running shoes, adhesives, rubber, paint, magazines and
lubricants, which are just some of the thousands of everyday objects that contain Nynas oils.

We divide our research into pure and applied. On the pure side, we have a laboratory dedicated to just
studying oil – for no other reason except to find out more about its remarkable qualities. The more we
learn, the more insightful our product development becomes. On the applied side, our research team
has access to advanced laboratories, including bench-scale hydrotreatment units and micro-reactors.
These resources allow us to create just the right solution for a given application. We also collaborate
with a number of technical colleges and universities, giving students the opportunity to do thesis work
or other projects in a vibrant environment.

At the heart of the network are eight refineries, complemented by a string of depots and sales offices,
strategically located around the globe.
Distribution of naphthenic speciality oils – hubs, facts and figures
Currently, we have 23 depots all around the world, of which Antwerp, Houston and Singapore are
central storage facilities and blending stations. Last year, some 700,000 tons of oil were transported by
sea. There were also 30,000 deliveries by road tanker, 6,000 container transports and 250,000 drums
delivered to customers all over the world. To ensure dependable supply to customers – in the event of
disruptions, for example – production can be transferred to other refineries and capacity increased at
our blending facilities.
Bitumen – a reliable supplier
To make our customers get their products on time, Nynas has 15 own supply points plus access to
another third party supply points across northern Europe – and each one has its own blending facilities.
Bitumen transports by road tanker must comply with stringent safety regulations. High levels of safety
awareness are maintained through audits and regular meetings with hauliers.

Creating value from heavy crude oil
Our core competence is to refine extra heavy crude oils into a balanced mix of naphthenic specialty oils
and bitumen products that meet global demand patterns
Making the most of every drop of oil
Every year, 2,5 million tonnes tons of bitumen and naphthenic specialty oils are manufactured in our
refineries. The production is carefully monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Hydrotreatment – one of our specialities
Few oil companies hydrotreat their distillates as rigorously as we do. How does it work? The distillate is
mixed with hydrogen gas at high pressure and temperature over a catalyst bed in the reactor. This
'treatment' removes sulphur and nitrogen, while also reducing aromatic content. The result is a very
clean product – ideal for a great many applications.
Health and safety first
At Nynas, we train and inform our employees at regular intervals in all relevant safety measures and
environmental aspects. Our production facilities are checked and serviced regularly and comply with the
toughest health and safety standards, which you can read about under Environment.
The Nynäshamn refinery
It all started in 1928. One of the great Swedish industrialists, Axel Axelsson Johnson, together with
Charles Almqvist, were the men behind the building of Sweden’s first large scale refinery in Nynäshamn.
At that time, oil was already big business in America.

The largest supplier of bitumen for roads in Sweden and the Nordic countries
One of the largest producers of naphthenic specialty oils in the world
The largest private employer in Nynäshamn taking great responsibility to be a good neighbour caring for the environment and an open dialogue
The Gothenburg refinery
It was established in 1956 as a fuel refinery. Today the production focuses on bitumen for the Nordic
market.

Bitumen emulsions and Oxidized Bitumen
The refinery is situated close to the Gothenburg Harbour – the largest harbour in the Nordic
region
Gothenburg is Sweden's second city and a region under strong development with many large
infrastructure projects.
The Harburg refinery
Situated on both the north and south side of the river Elbe, the Harburg refinery produces all Nynas

One of the largest manufacturers of naphthenic special oils in the world
The Eastham refinery
Located on the River Mersey, the refinery was constructed on a greenfield site in 1966. It has been
operating as a 50/50 joint venture (Nynas/Shell) since 1992.
Did you know that:
-
The refinery was built as a dedicated bitumen refinery to meet the demand for bitumen at the
time of the motorway expansion in the UK in the 1960’s and 70’
The Eastham refinery has the combined capacity to produce almost 50% of the current UK
demand for bitumen.
There is an upgrading plant (Special Products Plant or SPP) on the site producing polymer
modified binders and emulsions. The SPP is owned by Nynas and operated by Nynas personnel.
