One of the most pleasant parts of submitting a term paper is the opportunity to thank all the
members of the group who have contributed to it. Unfortunately, the list of expressions of
gratitude is always incomplete and inadequate. These acknowledgments are no exception. Our
gratitude goes to the almighty Allah for bestowing us the patience and courage to finish this task.
We are making a research paper on reviewing an oligopoly Industry’s company: “BEACON
PHARMACEUTICALS LIMITED". which is a part of our “Microeconomics” course instructed
by our honourable teacher MD. RAZIB ALAM, Associate Professor, Department of Marketing,
University of Dhaka. We will learn how to make a term paper through this project. We are
following the instruction of our instructor. We sincerely acknowledge our gratitude and
appreciation to MD. RAZIB ALAM our honourable Sir, for his valuable counselling. Without
his guidance, support, and encouragement this would not have been possible. Heartfelt
appreciation goes to the team members, who showed unflagging patience and astounding
capacity for creative work and long hours which made the assignment both possible and
successful.

Section-1: Introduction
The application of the scientific method in the search for the truth regarding business phenomena
is known as business research. Company research is used to identify business opportunities and
issues, develop and evaluate alternative courses of action, and track personnel and organizational
performance, among other things. It is a critical action for a company since, if done correctly,
business research may assist an organization understand its current status and establish plans to
improve its viability in its area.
Title of the research
Reviewing an oligopoly Industry’s company: “BEACON PHARMACEUTICALS LIMITED".
Background of the research
An oligopoly is a market arrangement in which only a few enterprises can prevent the others
from exerting considerable influence (Krugman and Wells, 2021). If the customers do not know
about the company’s products and services which is offered then it will not attract potential
customers. It’s an oligopoly market where only a few sellers operate in the market with similar
products and if new players want to operate in the market, they have entry barriers like economies
of scale, market power, legal issues, and so on. As a company in the lucrative market, the
company needs to be very carefully served the market. The company offers products which are
life saver for the people. That is why, the topic is selected for the research.
Aim and objectives
The aim of the research is to review an oligopoly market so that the proper understanding of this
market can be acknowledged. Objectives are:
 Understanding the oligopoly market and, its profitability.
 Illustrating the positive & negative impact of the oligopoly market.
 Investigating the impact of competition on “Beacon Pharmaceutical Limited”
 Recommendations for “Beacon Pharmaceutical Limited” in near future

Section-2: Literature Review
In this section, the industry will be reviewed by using different types of companies in
pharmaceutical industry.
Describing the oligopoly Market
Oligopoly is a market model in which market or production house are ruled by a small number
of large sellers and producers. The term, a few large producers, is necessarily ambiguous because
the market model oligopoly covers huge ground. For example, Bangladesh pharmaceuticals
industries only firms control whole industry.
Because of “fewness” oligopoly market can control their market price.
Number
Individual
Few or some
Sellers
Oligopoly are few firms selling homogenous or differentiated products. It depends on firms what
types of products they produced. Many industries produced homogenous products, such as,
(Cement, steel, aluminium & zinc etc.). On the other hand, some industry produced differentiated
products. It is consumers goods, such as, (medicines, automobiles, electronic equipment & house
hold appliances etc.).
Characteristics of Oligopoly Market
 Few Sellers -this market has few sellers and they controlled whole market. For example:
The market of pharmaceuticals in Bangladesh is an oligopolist form as they are few
sellers.
 Barriers to entry -It is hard to enter into an oligopoly market. For example -Economics
of scale, large expenditure for capital, patents etc.
 Interdependence – activities of one firm affect the activity of another firm. For example:
Bangladesh cement industry If crown cement changes anything their industry, such as,
production, price, promotion method, as a result other competitors (Fresh, Holcim &
Premier) will change this thing (McKendrick, 2022).
 Product differentiation-It can be homogenous or differentiated products. Non- Price
Competition – This point in oligopoly market they change other terms than price.
 Economic Analysis -Structural and behavioural are two screening methods.
Page |8
Models of oligopoly market:
Three models of oligopoly 1.
The kinked – demand curve
2.
Collusive Pricing
3.
Price leadership
Examples of Oligopoly Industries:
1. The automobile industry
2. The steel industry
3. The photographic equipment industry
4. The aircraft manufacturing industry
5. The beer (wholesale) industry
6. The cereal (breakfast) industry
7. Infant formula makers
8. The oil industry (wholesale)
9. The airline industry
What are the three main features of an oligopoly?
The three most important characteristics of oligopoly are:
(1) An industry dominated by a small number of large firms,
(2) Firms sell either identical or differentiated products, and
(3) The industry has significant barriers to entry.
Why we think it is oligopoly company?
Because this company has got few competitors like ACI, SKF, SQUARE etc. Typically, a great
deal particularly with product differentiation.
Competitive advantages of Beacon: Based on Beacon pharmaceuticals company Bangladesh,
develop a set of recommendations to improve the company's profitability, and to create and/or
sustain competitive advantage for the next five years [2021-2026]. Explain and defend your
decision making in developing these recommendations.

Overviewing of Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceuticals industry in Bangladesh is one of the most developed technology sectors
within the country. Manufacturers provide Insulin, Hormones and Cancer drugs. This sector
supplies 97% of the total medicinal needs of the local market. Like-wise number one in
Oncology, Beacon Pharmaceuticals Limited is the first company in Bangladesh who is proudly
exporting Hepatitis C generic medicine more than 45 countries around the Globe. Such countries
are USA, UK, Australia, Italy, Russia etc. Many purchases that individuals make at the retail
level are produced in markets that are oligopolies. Oligopoly arises when a small number of large
firms have all or most of the sales in an industry. If oligopolistic firms compete hard, they may
end up acting very much like perfect competitors, driving down costs & leading to zero profits
for all. If it concludes each other, they may effectively act like monopoly & succeed in pushing
up prices and earning consistently high level of profit. This market is typically characterized by
mutual interdependence.
Impact of Beacon on the medicine industry:
Beacon Pharmaceuticals Limited is the number one oncology company and one of the leading
and fastest growing pharmaceutical companies of
Bangladesh. The Company started its operation in
2006. Now Beacon is one of the top oncology
pharmaceutical companies of Bangladesh. This
section
includes
an
overview
of
Beacon
Pharmaceuticals, market characteristics of Beacon
and the impact of Beacon in competitive pharmaceuticals industry. Due to the high expenses of
researching and marketing new treatments, as well as patents that protect new goods from
competition, the pharmaceutical business is rapidly becoming an oligopoly. According to, this
company have few competitors but we count this company. ACI, SKF, SQUARE etc. Typically,
a great deal particularly with product differentiation. The impact of beacon in competitive
pharmaceuticals industry based on Beacon pharmaceuticals company, Bangladesh has
developed a set of recommendations to improve the company's profitability, and to create and/or
sustain competitive advantage for the next five years [2021-2026]. Explain and defend your
decision making in developing these recommendations. The company’s profit rose in the last
two years, so investors purchased its shares. But the price is now overvalued said by a top official
of an asset management company. Bangladesh’s leading drug maker square pharmaceuticals

Section 3: Research Methodology
The term "methodology" refers to how the entire research process is carried out and which
procedures are used to perform the research (Goddard and Melville, 2013). A researcher must
select efficient approaches in order to obtain an accurate study outcome. The focus of this part
will be on the research methodologies.
Research approach
The researcher will be able to determine which type of research to undertake by selecting
the appropriate research approach. For performing research properly, there are two ways that can
be used. Positivism and Interpretivism are the terms used to describe these two schools of
thought. Interpretivism is a method of using secondary data to explain the study objectives
(Aityan, 2022). The interpretivism technique is employed when performing qualitative research.
However, if the right information needs to be gathered, researchers must use numerical data.
Quantitative data analysis is employed in positivism, which will be used in this investigation. A
researcher must examine several factors before adopting quantitative data analysis. The
numerical information aids in the research's precision. If the data isn't solid enough, this method
isn't suited for the study. However, positivism is the best technique for this study. The problem
with this strategy can be solved if the study is properly considered and more people participate
in it.
Research design
The general method for conducting a successful and logical study by creating a
questionnaire, collecting data, integrating, and interpreting the findings (Hammersley, 2013).
There are three types of research: exploratory research, descriptive research, and causal research.
Researchers conduct exploratory research to explain ambiguity or generate new ideas. The
exploratory research will be used to create a new product. Casual research, on the other hand, is
used to evaluate cause-and-effect relationships. For example, in this study, the research will be
done on the impact of advertising on sales, but the study will be designed as descriptive research.
Through WH questions, descriptive research design provides a picture of the scenario that was
given to do study.
The researcher designed a questionnaire including dichotomous questions, several categories
closed-ended questions, and Likert scale questions for this investigation. It will be simpler to
collect and analyze data. Descriptive research is better for performing research more readily,
inexpensively, and fast. Because the study is focusing on the impact of advertising on sales, the
P a g e | 11
findings must be examined in depth. If descriptive research is conducted, the study will be quite
valuable.
Methods and data collection
The procedure for gathering and interpreting data is referred to as the research method.
Personal interviews, internet surveys, focus groups, and observations are all examples of data
collection methods that can be used in primary research, as this study does. Online surveys will
be used to collect data for this study. It is easier to engage with people and less time-consuming
to conduct online surveys.
There are numerous advantages to conducting an online survey. The collection of data is much
easier with an online survey, the cost is low, the input and handling of data is automated, and
because an online survey is comfortable for everyone, it gives the highest rate of data collection,
the questionnaire design is customizable, and so on. This has certain drawbacks as well. Because
no interviewer can coach individuals to a good answer, an internet poll isn't suited for the openended topic. Because not everyone has access to the internet, it is unable to reach everyone. All
of the issues can be resolved if the research is done properly. The majority of the questions in
this study are structured in a closed-ended manner. Thus, it is believed that this survey result will
provide the researcher with the desired results.
Participants and sampling:
The quality of the data is critical for doing effective research and achieving excellent
results. This will aid in the completion of a proper research project. To perform the research
more explicitly, it was necessary to ensure that it was valid and authentic, which could be
accomplished by effective data gathering.
There are sampling tactics or techniques that can assist in gathering the necessary data and
information about participants' likeliness or dislikes based on their personal experiences. This
study will use the basic sampling approach, which is one of many available. The simple sample
approach is when all participants are picked at random, allowing the entire population to
participate in the study. This strategy is used by the researchers to avoid sample bias and
inaccuracy. This technique aids in the collection of data without bias and ensures data accuracy.
However, because the entire community might participate in the study, it is time-consuming and
the researchers lose control over their sample. The similar thing happened in this study.
The sample size for this study was 50 people. The entire sample operation was based on
a straightforward random sampling method. People who take part in this procedure work in
P a g e | 12
marketing or have recently graduated from marketing. Because the data validity is linked to
sampling, it should be carefully considered. Due to time and financial constraints, the study team
opted on this sample size. This sample size is expected to be the most effective sampling. A
sample's acquired data is heterogeneous. The information was gathered using a quantitative
methodology.
Viability and reliability
The viability and reliability of the obtained data are essential for fulfilling the research's
goal, because without these, the audience will not believe the research is acceptable or
trustworthy. The researcher will examine whether the research result is genuine and dependable
by comparing it to the results of past studies and comparing them.
Another way to assess validity and reliability was to undertake similar sorts of study and see if
the results were repeatable. All of these aspects were taken into account by the researcher when
assessing the research findings and ensuring validity and reliability.

Section 6: Conclusion
The pharmaceuticals industry in Bangladesh is one of the most developed technology sectors
within the country. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most technologically advanced
sectors currently in existence in Bangladesh. It has grown in the last two decades at a
considerable rate. The skills and knowledge of the professionals and innovative ideas of the
people involved in this industry are the key factors for these developments. About 300
pharmaceutical companies are operating at the moment. Only 3% of the drugs are imported, the
remaining 97% come from local companies. Positive developments in the pharmaceutical sector
have enabled Bangladesh to export medicine to global markets. By overcoming the underlying
obstacles this sector can develop more and can be an effective exporting sector of Bangladesh.
The pharmaceutical sector has already been declared as the thrust sector by the government of
Bangladesh. Bangladesh has built a strong baseline and going towards the self-sufficiency for
the production of medicine. Meanwhile, some companies have started to produce vaccine,
insulin, anticancer drugs, etc. Our pharmaceutical industries are successful in domestic market.
Now, it’s the time to grow our international market because we passing golden time getting the
opportunity of patent exemption by the TRIPS until 2016. Besides the above discussing points,
providing cash incentive by the govt. to the medicine exporters, like RMG may encourage
pharmaceutical exporters. International fair arrangement by Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) is
a very effective way to search buyers and to establish business in a new country. A lot of initiative
has been taken by BAPI in different times, such as, high level pharmaceuticals delegation team
visited foreign countries to explore export initiated by BAPI. This organization also upheld the
demand and urged to the government and other concerning authorities for API Park,
Bioequivalence test laboratory, Central drug testing laboratory, cash incentives, problems in
remit transfer and sample sending etc. But many issues are yet to resolve. We have already
wasted our valuable time and still losing to build our infrastructure for export. We should
complete our infrastructure as soon as possible because TRIPs patent protection may be adopted
to us after 2016. The government should really be attentive to remove all the obstacles and solve
all the problems to see pharmaceutical sector as a vital player in international market.

Recommendation
There are no significant doubts about the company's ability to continue as a going concern. The
board of directors has reviewed the company's business plan and is satisfied that the company
has adequate resources to continue its operations in the foreseeable future. According to, the
financial statements are prepared based on the going concern concept. Providing yearly
performance incentive in case money to employees particularly sales & marketing countries.
Beacon introduced revolutionary lung cancer drug Crizotinib. They also must concentrate on the
sales force because people are the most valuable asset in any successful organization, but this
pharmaceutical company lacks the necessary sales force to work faster and advance in the
market. As a result, they will be able to expand their product line, allowing them to better present
the brand.
