12. In our everyday life, it has been observed that when a pan full of water is boiled
on a flame, its temperature increases, but when the flame is turned off, it slowly
cools down.
This is because of the phenomenon of heat transfer taking place between the
pan full of water and the flame. It has been established that heat transfer takes
place from hotter objects to colder object.
When there are objects which are at different temperatures or there is an
object at a different temperature from the surroundings, then the transfer of
heat takes place so that the object and the surrounding, both reach an
equilibrium temperature.

All the alkali metals are silvery white, soft and light metals. Because of the
large size, these elements have low density which increases down the group
from L i to Cs. However, potassium is lighter than sodium. The melting and
boiling points of the alkali metals are low. The alkali metals and their salts
impart characteristic colour to an oxidizing flame.

The alkali metals tarnish in dry air due to the formation of their oxides which in
turn react with moisture to form hydroxides. They burn vigorously in oxygen
forming oxides.
The alkali metal halides are all high melting, colourless crystalline solids. They

carbonate with aqueous hydrohalic acid (HX ). All of these halides have high
