1. INT. CAR - DOWNTOWN Overcast afternoon. Taylor and Mike are in their car, making their way through the city. They're having a heated argument. A Creed song is playing on the radio. MIKE I just don't understand how the hell you cat decision over my head. Taylor is focused on driving. MIKE (CONT'D) This is a major frickin' change in our lives. Her eyes turn teary. She straight ahead. MIKE (CONT'D) This is really my major grievance in this marriage, honey, this exact thing. This is the reason I sometimes have second thoughts. TAYLOR That's really tough to hear right now. Suddenly, an old lady walks out in front of them. MIKE Watch out! Taylor slams on the brakes and swerves, avoiding the lady. They screech sideways on the street, stopping covering two lanes. The sound of screeching tires increases. A cement truck appears behind them, slamming into their car, crushing the driver's side. Glass and metal fragments are everywhere. Everything stops. A breath. Mike sees Taylor crushed behind the steering wheel. He screams, and manages to get out of his own door, then runs around to her side. Taylor is sandwiched between bent metal. Her eyes are open, and blood is running out her mouth. She's dead. MIKE (CONT'D) Taylor! Taylor! He collapses down on the asphalt. 2. People gather to help. INT. HOSPITAL - NIGHT Mike is sitting in a hospital bed. His cousin and his cousin's wife are sitting by his side. It's incredibly gloomy, not a word is said. His cousin tries to make a comforting face. Mike looks at some pictures of Taylor in a photo album. Suddenly he starts sobbing. His cousin's wife reaches out her hand to touch his. COUSIN Mike, it's impossible to secondguess yourself like that. What were you supposed to do, run her over? You did what any of us would have done. Painful silence. COUSIN'S WIFE It's really not your fault. A doctor in a lab coat and a male nurse in green scrubs enter. COUSIN Hey, we also have to pick up the kids. See you tomorrow, buddy, OK? Mike nods. DOCTOR If you'd like, I can extend the light morphine. It'll help you rest. MIKE OK. The doctor puts a new medicine into the pump and checks Mike's IV. Meanwhile, the nurse stands at the end of the bed and looks at Mike uncomfortably long. Mike looks away. DOCTOR That should work until tomorrow, OK? 3. Mike nods. The doctor walks out. The nurse walks closer. Something about him seems shady. NURSE I heard you could use some help. MIKE Oh, are you a crisis counselor? NURSE I wouldn't go that far. The doctor looks from across the hallway. There's no nurse in the room. Mike is talking to himself. He walks into the room and over to Mike, passing right through the nurse. Mike is suddenly very aware. DOCTOR Sir, I really think it would be a good idea for you to see our PTSD counselor, you've been through a very traumatic event. Mike nods politely while trying to keep track of the nurse out the corner of his eye. MIKE Maybe tomorrow. DOCTOR Alright. But please make use of the services. It's normal to have a delayed reaction. MIKE OK. The doctor walks out, passing through the nurse one more time. MIKE (CONT'D) What's going on? NURSE What would you say if I told you that this whole thing doesn't have to have happened? MIKE I don't understand. 4. NURSE I can help you change it so it didn't happen. MIKE Are you selling something? NURSE No, no, it's totally legit. The nurse looks down on the picture of Taylor. Mike follows his eyes down. NURSE (CONT'D) You were in the car with Taylor. She was driving. That Creed song was on the radio. Mike looks up. NURSE (CONT'D) You passed a Burger King, but Taylor wouldn't pull over because she had promised to help you keep your diet. MIKE How do you know this? The nurse is starting to get impatient with him. NURSE I told you. Come on, what do you say? He clicks with his mouth like a peppy salesman. MIKE I'm not sure. NURSE Tell me about the accident. MIKE Well, we were fighting... Mike hestitates, can't believe he's telling a stranger. NURSE It's OK. It's me. 5. MIKE Taylor had asked her sister to move in with us, and I got upset that she didn't ask me about it. Mike sees the photo, and his eyes become teary. The nurse gestures for him to move on. He hands him a tissue. NURSE There there. MIKE Anyway, we were discussing, and suddenly this old lady steps out into traffic. EXT. STREET - DAY Suddenly, there's a flash of light, and they're there. The scene is frozen, and there's a somber blue mood. NURSE Follow me. MIKE OK. Mike staggers after the nurse around a frozen guy on a bicycle. Their steps sound crisp like ice, there's visible vapor when they breathe. Suddenly he sees their car at a distance. Taylor is inside. MIKE (CONT'D) Oh my God, Taylor! NURSE Just a second. They arrive by the car. MIKE How are you doing this? Is it really her? NURSE OK, so here's the crash about to happen. What could you have done differently? MIKE I don't understand. 6. NURSE What caused the accident? MIKE What is this place? NURSE Focus. What caused the accident? MIKE Well, I saw the old lady before Taylor, but I didn't warn her because I thought she saw her too. NURSE OK, so try warning her. MIKE Now? NURSE No, concentrate. You gotta concentrate, OK. Remember what it is you have to do. Ready? Mike is confused.
