Eliot. Today, in general, books are indispensable in the development progress of people. With students whose major in Economics, books provide them with useful and fundamental knowledge about the nature, the rules of economic events or deep insights from famous economists. However, there are several reasons for the decreasingly number of economic students who are interested in reading books which are related to their major. There are two objective reasons for this phenomenon: first is the vast and abundant nature or the property of economics, which can confuse students in choosing the right books and second is the style of expressing economic knowledge in various books being too academic and confusing with students. There also exist two main subjective reason why students do not like reading this genre: first is that the existence and popularity of the Internet and social media have outweighed the reading habits, and second is the fact that their lack of comprehension of Economics related majors prevents them from knowing what to choose. For those aforementioned reasons, group 2 decided to establish “Breview- a book-reviewing project for students majoring in Economics”. His mission is to provide students with information about easy-to-read, wonderfully illustrated and beneficial economic-related books. After just only one month operation, our project has achieved impressive numbers and great outcomes: a total of 2000 people reached the reviews, with nearly 1000 interactions for just only 5 main review posts. There are also inspirational comments from Breview followers “Breview is just what I need for a proper orientation”. Although Breview is a newborn project, marketing by words of mouth and funded with limited sponsorship, founders and cofounders of this project still make our best to enhance Breview’s content quality, grow Breview’s popularity with various marketing strategies in the upcoming period. BReview P a g e 3 | 15 Chapter 1 – AN OVERVIEW ABOUT BREVIEW 1.1 – Name, slogan and members of the project 1.1.1 – Name, logo and slogan of the project Through several meetings and debates, our group had carefully chosen a name for this project - Breview. There are two main reasons why we decided to choose this name for our project: Firstly, “Breview” represents our spirit and mission as it is the combination of “Book” and “Review”. Our mission in this project is to raise business student’s awareness about financial books so we would like the name of our project must contain two elements “Review” and “Book”. “Breview” is a wonderful choice which satisfies those two conditions. Secondly, “Breview” is also the shortest and most direct way to show people what our group is going to do. The way of expressing the name in abbreviation is close and popular with the young. The shorter a word is, the easier for people to remember. In order to enhance our popularity, we must choose a name that is short and meaningful. Below is our logo, used during the time of conducting project: Figure 1.1 – BReview’s Logo picture From this logo, we can see books, the soul of our project in the center of the logo. Another factor is the project name which is placed under the books and bold in order to emphasize our mission. Our project also has a slogan to introduce to visitors why we choose to review books, especially financial books “Better books yields better outlook”. It is common knowledge that books raise people’s awareness about one special field. But few people know or aware that books also can make people change their view of life, even their destiny in a better and more promising way. For that reason, our slogan has become our morale compass during the time conducting the project. BReview P a g e 4 | 15 1.1.2 – Members No. 1 2 3 4 5 Name Trần Phương Thanh Nguyễn Đặng Quỳnh Anh Trần Phương Anh Đỗ Tất Đạt Vũ Thanh Đức Student ID 2112150159 2112150012 2112150023 2112150050 2112150054 Table 1.1 – Group members 1.2 – Location and time range 1.2.1 – Location Our group chose Facebook, an online platform to conduct our project, for two main reasons: Firstly, Facebook is an affordable platform for us to post book reviews as it does not charge us an amount of money to do that. If we build a website to post our project, some problems which are related to money is unavoidable. For example, we must buy domain name and even if the domain name is free of charge, we still have to spend time to design our website. This progress is considered to be unnecessary and time-wasting as we want to focus on the quality of our reviews. Secondly, posting book reviews on Facebook is easy to conduct with our recent resources. Each member of our group has laptop and internet connection to post reviews on this platform. Therefore, there is no obstacle in the progress of writing and posting reviews. Moreover, the interface of Facebook is quite familiar with our targeted visitors as they have got used to gathering information in Facebook. As a result, there is also no difficulty for people to read or contact with our review in this channel. 1.2.2 – Time range “Breview” started on May 3rd 2022 and reported on the 22nd of June 2022. Initial report has been sent to our supervisor on June 12th 2022. BReview P a g e 5 | 15 1.3 – Targeted followers Our target in this mission is students at the age of 18-24 majoring in Economics in universities in Hanoi such as Foreign Trade University, National Economics University, etc. 1.4 – Budget Having carefully considered, during the time of the project, the only payment our group have is the payment of books appeared in our giveaway event including buying books and wrapping to send to the lucky people. Our group believe that this amount of money is an affordable trade off in order to reach more targeted followers. BReview P a g e 6 | 15 Chapter 2 – SOME DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT BREVIEW 2.1 – Reasons for choosing this project a - Objective reasons - - The nature or the property of Economics is quite vast and abundant, which can drown students in the sea of books and materials. Therefore, the students will not know how to choose the book that suits their level of knowledge in each period. The style of expressing economic knowledge in various books is too academic and confusing with students. Students do not fancy reading this genre because they loathe mathematical knowledge such as complex principles, complicated numbers embedded in these pages, which is indispensable in those books. b - Subjective reasons The existence and popularity of the Internet and social media outweigh the reading habits. Nowadays, with the help of social media, students can easily search for information with just a click, instead of taking time to open the book looking up for it. The Internet or social media consists of nearly every information that you want, and one big subject can be divided into several small lessons, maybe included in short clips on Youtube or some posts on Facebook, etc, not to mention their content can be more intriguing. In fact, none of them, but paper books, can cover all the details and the general view of a subject. Despite the benefits that books bring about, most undergraduates, however, are not in need of it, especially during stressful times with deadlines and jobs. A huge number of undergraduates opt for Economics related majors with the lack of comprehension of them. According to statistics, 64,5% of fresh-men do not fully understand their major, 50,8% don’t know which job to choose after graduation, and 32,4% are not really satisfied with their choice.(1) An explanation to this is that many students choose to study Economics because they thought that career prosperity will be pretty easy and open; or just basically because of the fame of some universities. To emancipate, we choose this program because of all the aforementioned reasons. With the awareness of the importance of books to students’ life, we want to assist students in the acquisition of knowledge by providing them with informative book reviews, especially in the field of economics. By doing so, we aspire to create positive impacts on the reading habits of students and raise people’s awareness of how crucial and vital books are to the development of the society. BReview P a g e 7 | 15 2.1.1 – Analysis on reading habits in Vietnam On the one hand, although being fully aware of the undeniable roles of books, the majority of people in Vietnam still opt against involving in any reading behaviors. This situation can be triggered by many external or internal factors. One of the many that has to be mentioned is the abundance of books available on the market. Consequently, students will find it difficult to choose the most suitable ones for them to actually get themselves immersed in reading and to not waste their time on unqualified books without attaining any valuable knowledge from these sources. Also, there is still a mindset that ever exists is that reading is too tedious to remain readers’ motivation and incentive to keep on reading. Students will ask themselves a question if there are other more interesting sources such as films, movies, youtube videos, etc that they can refer to while being in need of help because they opine that by watching those clips, it will be more entertaining as well as captivating than sitting all day long to read a book. On the other hand, there are still keen readers who contribute a huge amount of their time to read their favorite books. Unfortunately, no matter how passionate such readers are about reading, they are still uncertain about their future careers and which fields, functions, jobs to specialize in. Justifications for this are that: firstly, there are few books giving insights into each major in details, which means that they just generalize the knowledge in the field instead of providing readers with a look at close quarters, making it harder for students reading these books to nurture their knowledge and explore their real passion; secondly, economics books are undeniably difficult to absorb, which will in turn discourage students; Thirdly, in this technological-driven world, accumulating information via the Internet is much more preferable than the traditional method. Although it is indisputable that the Internet grants users with all the conveniences and comfort to access to information: with just a click, students can find enormous and various online sources of information, traditional measure of reading paper books has its own inarguable advantages; Fourthly, in economics field, some students choose this field without careful consideration and passion, which means that the reasons behind their option is basically the reputation of universities, popular fields, possibility to get employed, entailing the fact that such students do not have any motivation to read economics books. According to an international research in 2016, only 30% of Vietnamese read books on a daily basis, 26% is the number for non-readers and 44% of people claim that they sometimes read books.(2) The amount of time devoted to reading books of Vietnamese, on average, only reached 1h/person/week. Those statistics all demonstrate the uncommon reading habits of Vietnamese. BReview P a g e 8 | 15 2.2 - Purposes of carrying out the project 2.2.1 - Overall purpose a - Short-term target - Provide prestigious, interesting books for economics students Incentivize students at universities to read more b - Long-term target - Change students’ mindset about the idiosyncrasies of books, especially the ones related to economics Assist students in vocational guidance Nurture reading habits for students of all ages Creating positive impacts on the society as a whole by spreading the importance of reading books 2.2.2 – Specific Purpose On the field of media: - Number of likes: 50+ likes/ post - Number of followers: 200+ followers - Aims to reach to: 500+ accounts/ post Number of post per week: 2 posts Weakly research, read at least 5 books to single out 2 to review 2.3 – Actions launched during the project 2.3.1 – The possibility of some recommended forms of action a – Criteria for choosing books to review As one of the main reasons for which reading books do not gain much attention and interest from most undergraduates results from their features themselves. Therefore, our project – BReview – aims to improve as well as to solve the problem; and our first and foremost duty is to choose the best economics books to introduce to economics-specialised students. Here are our criteria by which the books are “qualified”: - Firstly, the content of the book should include a sufficient amount of information. More specifically, since our target is at students majoring in Economics – Business – Finance, it is necessary to choose ones that provide a clear overview and detailed knowledge about the subject needed. Besides, case studies should also be involved more BReview P a g e 9 | 15 - - in order to help students to comprehend better and be able to bring their lessons into practice. Secondly, their method of conveying information should be innovative and unique. Sometimes, students do not like to read because they have not found a proper book that can boost their interest in reading. That is why, instead of a book full of words, we would choose the one that includes graphs, images, etc or basically convey lessons in an intriguing way. Last but not least, inspiration is important. In fact, not all books are academic. Some must-read ones do not include much academic information, but instead they are like a summary of experiences and lessons from the seniors who are successful in their career. These sorts of book can support our young readers to be more well-oriented and have a realistic choice of career. b – Cost Since the activities during the project, as planned, do not require any specific professional equipments or services, the total cost to lauch the project is affordable. c – Methods of communications Two popular methods of communications, online and offline, was chosen to launch the projects. The pros and cons of the 2 approaches are presented in the table below: Number of members in charge Number of reaches Efficience Online communications Using social media Only need a small number of members to prepare the content and administrate the web/ fanpage Attracts more viewers, by sharing and commenting on new posts Is not as efficient as talking faceto-face, because we can not have an exact number of real and virtual interactions Offline communications By word of mouth More members joining the project comes better effect to students Not reaches as much people to join as via social media Is more predictable because we can meet and communicate with others in person, to understand them more and find an appropriate solution Table 2.1 – Comparison between 2 methods of communications Therefore, we decided to choose these forms of communications to launch the project with hope to inspire as many undergraduates to read as possible. BReview P a g e 10 | 15 2.3.2 – Specific activities taking place during the project Based on the possibility of each kind of communication, we chose 2 main activities to accomplish the project in the given period: Create a Facebook page and making review posts on it https://www.facebook.com/BReview-Better-books-yield-better-outlook-103724635676395/ - Writing posts to review books that meets our criteria and suitable for students majoring in Economics – Business – Finance - Arrange an online give away to send our potential viewers with one of the reviewed books as a gift Communicate with students in person Each member in our team will meet some students (an acquaintance, for example) in person to discuss about reading books, introduce the Facebook page to them and recommend some mustread if they wish. An effect of this way of communications is that people would introduce our project to more and more people, including avid readers and not-so-much readers. 2.3.3 – Some risks occurring during the project BReview is still a “young” project. Established only a few months ago, BReview have not gained much attentions from the public in general and from university students in particular. Hence, interactions (reaction, comments, sharing) at Facebook posts and the number of page followers is pretty poor. Communications by word of mouth did not actually create a big influence enough. By theory, speaking in person is more effective than just posting on Facebook, but the small number of members, however, does not make huge impacts in a very short period of time. That is why speaking through social media was chosen as the main approach. Besides, another feasible option was to ask for support from family, friends and other acquaintances (for example, tell them to introduce BReview project to others). There was rarely sponsorship or donation to enlarge the scale of the project. Due to limited budget, we could not arrange to extent the project in order to attract more attention and gain everyone’s popularity. An explanation to this is because BReview has not get enough achievement to build up trust among other potential investors. Therefore, we chose the best books and carefully prepared review posts to have as much trust from undergraduates and parents as possible. BReview P a g e 11 | 15 Chapter 3 - ACTUAL RESULTS AND PROPOSED RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 – Result and Achievements 3.1.1 – Project implementation results Here are some impressive numbers that BReview has gained: - 180+ page likes - 180+ page followers - A total of 2000 people reached the articles, nearly 1000 interactions In 1 month of operation, BReview has published many articles including main activities such as book review and a special Give-away program.
