The VALCAP® system provides the precise monitoring
of temperature profiles along power cables and all
rating data calculated by the integrated ADAP PRO
software. All services from project planning to
commissioning, customizing of software
management, maintenance, update and upgrade
services are provided out of one hand by nkt cables.
The concept of the VALCAP® system is straightforward
and its configuration is standardized and suitable to
transfer data into Scada systems and wherever it is
required.
To prepare your grid to benefit from this new technology nkt cables Power Cables can be equipped with
integrated sensor tubes. In order to retrofit an existing
system, nkt cables also provides solutions to attach
external sensor cables. All neccessary accessories are
inhouse developed.

The principle of installing a VALCAP® System
for Overhead Lines is similar to Power Cables.

The sensor fibres are housed complete hermetically sealed against all outer harsh environments
and therefore the optical sensor will not be limited
in lifetime compared to external sensor solutions.
In addition the placement of the sensor inside
the core of the conductor enables to always
measure the hotspot temperature across the
conductors cross section.
Some existing Overhead Lines are already
equipped with integrated optical fibre, so
that they are well prepared to use VALCAP®
technology.
The VALCAP® conductor is handled like the
longterm proven and well-known OPPC technology. All necessary optical fibre joints – easy
to install – are available.

With ADAP PRO
your grid gets smart
VALCAP® consists of two technological components.
One is concerned with the continues distributed
temperature monitoring (DTS) but the heart of the
VALCAP® technology is ADAP PRO.
ADAP PRO is the rating system inside VALCAP®
which turns the mere monitoring technology into a
dynamic analysing and predicting load management

tool. In conventional rating systems, the parameters
for the thermal equivalent circuit are determined and
then not changed again. Conversely, ADAP PRO is
a self-learning system. It compares the predictions

and optimizes the parameters in the thermal equivalent
circuit such, that further predictions can be prepared

surroundings change, for example due to the soil

adapts the parameters for the thermal equivalent
circuit so that predictions can be made with great

A well designed graphical user interface gives you all
important information at a glance. By clicking the
„Rating“ button you get load predictions for a chosen
date and time in the future. You can either show a
calculation of the ampacity, a calculation of the time
or a calculation of the temperature. With these
information you can manage your energy transmission
pro-actively and save.
