Napoleon Veloso Abueva Visual Arts Napoleon "Billy" Veloso Abueva (January 26, 1930 – February 16, 2018) was known as the "Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture" Through Proclamation No. 1539. He was proclaimed National Artist for Sculpture in 1976 when he was 46, making him the youngest recipient of the award to date. TRIVIA Abueva graduated in high school at the Rafael Palma College (now the University of Bohol) in 1949. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the UP School of Fine Arts (now UP College of Fine Arts/UPCFA) in 1953 as one of the second batch of Fine Arts students who moved from the old campus in Padre Faura to Diliman. SIGNIFICANCE AND CONTRIBUTION His Sandugo or Blood Compact shrine in Barangay Bool, Tagbilaran City is a landmark at the site of the first international treaty of friendship between Spaniards and Filipinos. Arturo Luz Visual Arts Arturo Rogerio Dimayuga Luz (November 26, 1926 – May 26, 2021) was a Filipino visual artist. He was also a known printmaker, sculptor, designer and art administrator. TRIVIA Luz attended the School of Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. He also went abroad to study at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland from 1947 to 1949, the Brooklyn Museum Art School in New York from 1949 to 1950, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris from 1950 to 1951. AWARDS - Luz won first prize for his work. He also garnered an award from the California Art Association and was a recipient of the Republic Cultural Heritage Award for Painting of the Philippine Republic in 1966. He was also recognized as the Outstanding Young Man In Art by The Manila Times. SIGNIFICANCE AND CONTRIBUTION From 1976 to 1986, Luz served as the first director of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and is a frequent participant of exhibits held at the museum. Juan Napkil Architecture Juan Felipe de Jesús Nakpil, KGCR (born Juan Felipe Nakpil y de Jesús; May 26, 1899 – May 7, 1986) known as Juan Nakpil, was a Filipino architect, teacher and a community leader. In 1973, he was named one of the National Artists for architecture. He was regarded as the Dean of Filipino Architects. TRIVIA He studied engineering at the University of California and later, at the University of Kansas, where he received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then studied architecture at the Fontainebleau School of Fine Arts in France upon the recommendation of Jean Jacques Haffner, one of his professors at the Harvard Graduate School of Architecture. He also designed the International Eucharistic Congress altar and improved the Quiapo Church in 1930 by erecting a dome and a second belfry. Jose Maceda Music José Montserrat Maceda (31 January 1917 – 5 May 2004) was a Filipino ethnomusicologist and composer. He was named a National Artist of the Philippines for Music in 1998. TRIVIA Starting in 1952, he conducted fieldwork on the ethnic Music of the Philippines. From about 1954, he was involved in the research and composition of musique concrète. In 1958, he worked at a recording studio in Paris which specialized in musique concrète. AWARDS -Order of National Artist of the Philippines SIGNIFICANCE AND CONTRIBUTION As an ethnomusicologist, Maceda investigated various forms of music in Southeast Asia, producing numerous papers and even composing his own pieces for Southeast Asian instruments. Jose Maceda collected audio records materials of traditional music amongst various populations in Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, part of these audio archives are deposited in the CNRS – Musée de l’Homme audio archives in France (a digitized version is available online). His entire musical collections were inscribed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2007, as submitted by the U.P. Center for Ethnomusicology and nominated by the Philippine government. Alice Reyes Dance Alice Garcia Reyes (born October 14, 1942)[1][2] is a Filipina dancer, choreographer, teacher, director and producer. TRIVIA Reyes was once married to Dick Upton, the current treasurer of Ballet Philippines, but they got separated in 1982. Upton later came out as gay and married his partner Elmer. AWARDS - Order of National Artist of the Philippines SIGNIFICANCE AND CONTRIBUTION In 2017, Reyes was brought back on as the artistic director of Ballet Philippines (BP), just in time for the company’s 50th year anniversary. Her permanent residence was still in the US so she flew in and out of the Philippines for her occupation as artistic director.
